About the Winery

Elan Fayard founded Azur in 2007 after studying oenology in Bordeaux and Provence. Her first wine was a Provençal-style rosé, made when serious American rosé was still a rarity, and Vogue later named it one of the best rosés in the world. Azur describes itself as a small, family- and female-owned Napa Valley winery, and Elan still sets its winemaking philosophy.

The range has grown to classic Napa varietals, led by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Champagne and other limited-production bottlings. Fruit comes from partner growers in some of the valley's most sought-after vineyards. Elan, who lives in a renovated historic farmhouse in Coombsville, also runs Empreinte Wines and her own winemaking consultancy.

The tasting room is a modern bar on Clinton Street in downtown Napa. You can pop in for a relaxed glass or reserve a tasting with friends, with artisanal food pairings on offer, and the rosé is the natural place to start. The room opens at noon, so we spend the morning at another winery and bring you here after lunch.

Tasting Fees

Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Azur does not publish its tasting prices.

About 12 minutes away. A seated tasting at the modern bar on Clinton Street, with artisanal food pairings if you like; we allow about an hour. The fee is confirmed when we book.

2:15 · Whetstone Wine Cellars

About 10 minutes away. A family winery pouring single-vineyard wines in a restored 19th-century French-style chateau at the base of Atlas Peak Road. The Classic Tasting of four wines is $65, 60 to 90 minutes. Open Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., last seating at 3 p.m.; 21 and over.

3:35 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 3:50 p.m., under six hours after pickup.

About $140 per person in tasting fees for Eleven Eleven and Whetstone, paid directly to each winery, plus Azur's fee, confirmed when we book.

Whetstone is open Thursday to Monday, and Azur takes walk-ins Wednesday to Sunday (Monday by reservation), so plan this day for Thursday to Monday. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.
