Caren and Nick, the family behind Arborum, bought their first Napa home in Calistoga in 1999 and in 2013 bought this historic property just north of St. Helena. It was first planted to grapes and olives in the 1870s by John and Hannah Weinberger. After JC Weinberger was killed in 1882, Hannah ran the bank, the vineyards and the winery, and the winery says she became Napa Valley's first female winemaker.
The family cleared the underbrush, revived a grove of century-old Mission olive trees and the old spring, and planted three steep blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon on the north-facing slopes of Spring Mountain. The Hidden Key Vineyard, named for an old key the children found in an oak, is organically farmed by hand by Renteria Vineyard Management. Andy Erickson makes the wines; the first harvest came in 2021.
Arborum gives all of its earnings from each release to causes in Napa Valley and beyond, from wildfire resilience to college access. The wines are sold by allocation only to people on its list, and the family hosts collector dinners in other cities by request. The estate does not receive visitors, so the day below visits three estates nearby that do.
Arborum does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 9:40 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Le Petit Pali St. Helena or Harvest Inn, for Smith-Madrone's 10 a.m. tasting.
Since Arborum does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Both hotels are in St. Helena, about 20 minutes from the top of Spring Mountain, and we start at 9:40 for Smith-Madrone's 10 a.m. tasting. The day runs a little under seven hours, and extra time is added by the hour.
About 20 minutes away. A dry-farmed Spring Mountain estate at the end of a long, winding road, where winemaker Charles Smith hosts the tasting himself. The Smith-Madrone Tasting is $65, prepaid. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10 a.m. only.
About 25 minutes away. A family winery on Zinfandel Lane where breads come out of a wood-fired oven at your table. The Wood-Fired Rustic Bread and Charcuterie Pairing is $100, three wines with an individual charcuterie platter; we allow about an hour. Book a week ahead; open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
About 8 minutes away. Lunch at Rutherford Grill, at Highway 29 and Rutherford Road, open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 8 minutes away. A small family estate on the Silverado Trail in Rutherford pouring small-lot Rutherford Cabernet and Cabernet Franc. The William Perry Experience is $85, about 90 minutes. By reservation, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Back in St. Helena by about 4:15 p.m.
About $250 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Smith-Madrone hosts only on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10 a.m., and Oakham is open Monday to Friday with a week's notice for the bread pairing, so this day works on Tuesday or Thursday.
