About the Winery

David Abreu is one of Napa Valley's best-known vineyard managers; in 1998 Robert Parker named him among the most influential wine personalities of the previous 20 years. He founded Abreu Vineyards in 1980, beginning with Madrona Ranch, his first property, which he developed through the 1980s. The first Abreu vintage was 1987, and Brad Grimes is the winemaker. David Abreu is also Sloan Estate's vineyard manager, and he planted the Bryant vineyard.

The winery calls Madrona Ranch its core: a working ranch of canyons and curves with cattle, goats, pigs, chickens and bees, and soils that run from red Aiken to white tufa. Other wines come from Thorevilos, Cappella and Las Posadas on Howell Mountain, where Abreu bought land on Cold Springs Road at auction in 2000. The 1997 Madrona Ranch earned 100 points from Robert Parker, one of a dozen perfect scores from The Wine Advocate.

Abreu sells its wine to members, with a waitlist for new buyers, and makes olive oil from the ranch too. It gives only a post office box in Rutherford and publishes no visiting program, so it does not host public visits. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, starting high on Howell Mountain.
