Above the Valley

About the Winery

Above the Valley grows Cabernet Sauvignon on a terraced vineyard perched, in the winery's words, high above the valley floor, at about 750 feet on the southwest-facing lower slopes of Atlas Peak. The vines were first planted in the 1980s, and the current owners, Rob Stahman and Jim Liefer, made their first vintage from the site in 2013.

Production is tiny, a few dozen cases a year, almost all Cabernet Sauvignon. Since 2020 the wine has been made at The Wine Foundry in Napa with winemaker Patrick Saboe, after earlier vintages made at Judd's Hill. The current releases are the 2022 and 2021 Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon, both offered on the winery's website, with news sent to its email list.

Above the Valley sells only through its website, and it publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below stays in the same southern corner of the valley: a cave walk on the Silverado Trail, a seated Cabernet tasting in the Stags Leap District and a tour of a family's working cellar in south Napa.

Tasting Fees

Above the Valley does not offer tastings.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Above the Valley does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort, at the foot of Atlas Peak, and Milliken Creek Inn, on the Napa River, are each about 8 to 10 minutes from the first stop. The day fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Rockmere Vineyards

About 8 minutes away. A small family vineyard on the Silverado Trail with wines made by Jeff Ames; the private visit starts with a walk through the caves where they are made and barrel samples of aging vintages. $75 per person (one fee waived for every two bottles purchased); we allow about 75 minutes. By appointment; we arrange it on your behalf.

11:45 · Lewis Cellars

About 10 minutes away. Race car driver Randy Lewis's Cabernet house, now pouring at a lavish new estate on the Silverado Trail in the Stags Leap District. The Legacy Tasting is $80; we allow about an hour. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; reservations are highly recommended.

2:25 · Mi Sueño Winery

About 18 minutes away. Rolando and Lorena Herrera's family winery in south Napa, where a behind-the-scenes tour of the working cellar ends with a seated tasting in the barrel room. $65 for the tour with the Dream Flight and chocolate truffles; we plan about 75 minutes. By appointment, Monday to Saturday.

3:40 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:00 p.m., six hours after pickup.

About $220 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Mi Sueño hosts Monday to Saturday, so plan this day for one of those days. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
