About the Winery

Jane Chapin bought a steep, rocky acreage in the Stags Leap District in 1998, looking for land and community rather than wine. Neighbors drew her into vineyard life and talked her into cutting a wine cave in 2002, years before her house was finished. She founded 4 Winds with her son Roy, and Roy and his wife, Maura, now live on the property and farm it.

The estate climbs from about 300 to 1,000 feet on a ridge of rock and oak just below the Palisades, with goats, guardian dogs, hens and gardens. Thomas Rivers Brown has made the wines since the first vintage in 2012, first from the neighboring Steltzner and Regusci vineyards. Estate blocks named Jack Straw, Tiercel and King Philip were planted in 2018, and the first estate Cabernet was released in 2024.

The wines are sold through the winery's online shop, and its contact page invites people to get in touch. 4 Winds publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do host, from a castle-style cave estate above Yountville to a salon in downtown Napa.
