About the Winery

Ken and Diane Wilson started in Dry Creek Valley as grape growers, planting their first vineyards high in the mountains at the northern end of the appellation and naming them for their children, Sydney, Victoria and Sawyer, and their parents, Carl, Dorothy and Ellie. They founded Wilson Winery in 1993 in a century-old tin barn, one of the oldest buildings in the valley, and restored it as a working winery. The family has since grown to 11 Wilson Artisan Wineries, and the children now have roles in the business.

Diane Wilson makes the wine, without formal winemaking training beyond the chemistry she learned as a biochemistry major, and her first wine won Best of Class. At the 2011 International Women's Winemaking Competition she won three Best of Class awards and Best of Show. Wilson is all about single-vineyard Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, farmed for low yields on the valley floor, the gravelly benchlands and rugged hilltops as high as 2,400 feet, including vineyards in the Rockpile appellation.

Tastings are on the deck, at a private outdoor table with a view out over the vineyards of Dry Creek Valley, and on the front lawn stands the Coyote, Bryan Tedrick's 26-foot, 7-ton steel sculpture first shown at Burning Man in 2013. Guests love a photo with it. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, picnics are encouraged, and covered, heated spaces keep the deck comfortable on cool days. It is less than a mile from Highway 101, so it is an easy first stop out of town.

Tasting Fees

$25 per person for the seasonal estate tasting of four single-vineyard wines, waived with a 1-bottle purchase. Wilson and Wilson Artisan club members get 4 complimentary tastings per visit.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:50 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Trio or Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza.

10:50 · Pickup at Hotel Trio or Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza

Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of town, is about 5 minutes from Wilson Winery, and Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza, on the plaza itself, about 10, so we collect everyone at 10:50 and are there when the tasting room opens at 11. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Wilson Winery

The seasonal estate tasting of four single-vineyard wines on the deck ($25), about an hour, with time for the Coyote.

12:20 · Lunch at Diavola

About 20 minutes away. Chef Dino Bugica's restaurant in a historic building on Geyserville Avenue, with Neapolitan-style pizza from a wood-burning oven, handmade pasta and house-cured salumi; the menu changes every day. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:55 · Bella Vineyards and Wine Caves

About 20 minutes away. A family-run winery at the quiet top of Dry Creek Valley, on Lily Hill, where old-vine Zinfandel is poured underground in wine caves dug into the hillside; guests love stepping out of the sun into the cool of the cave. The Seated Wine Tasting, in the caves or on the lawn, is $35 for up to 8 guests. Open daily 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; reservations highly recommended, walk-ins welcome.

3:30 · Hirsch Vineyards

About 35 minutes away. The Healdsburg tasting room of David Hirsch's far Sonoma Coast vineyard, planted in 1980 and made famous by Littorai, Williams Selyem and Kistler; the vineyard itself is closed to the public, so this is the place to taste it. Beyond the Fault Line, a private tasting of five limited wines including the San Andreas Fault Estate Pinot Noir, is $75 and takes 60 minutes; Discover Hirsch, a 45-minute communal tasting of four wines, is $45. By appointment only, daily; 21 and over.

4:30 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 4:40 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Wilson opens at 11, so this day starts with a 10:50 pickup and ends around 4:40. Hirsch is by appointment only, and we set the time when we book.

About $105 to $135 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
