About the Winery

Whistler Vineyards was founded in 2001 by Drs. Stig Hansen and Jennifer Whistler, who were inspired by Pinot Noir and by Burgundy in particular. After much research they settled on a site on what they call the "true" Sonoma Coast, four miles from the Pacific in the northwest corner of Sonoma County near the town of Annapolis, and planted the Whistler Vineyard there.

They have since added the Annapolis Ridge Vineyard a few miles away, have long farmed and made wine from the Little Creek (Wilson) Vineyard, and recently bought a vineyard in the Freestone-Occidental area, also on the West Sonoma Coast. The family makes every vineyard decision itself, and Stig Hansen and associate winemaker Niclas Dermutz make all the wines at the family winery in Dry Creek Valley.

The wines are sold through the winery's website and its wine club. The Dry Creek Valley winery is undergoing major renovations, and the family plans to open a tasting room in 2027, so for now it does not receive visitors. For a day nearby, we take guests to estates at the top of Dry Creek Valley that do open their doors.

Since Whistler Vineyards does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Zichichi Family Vineyard

About 25 minutes away. Century-old Zinfandel vines on West Dry Creek Road, and a visit that starts with a short walk behind the scenes of the winery before the tasting in a rustic tasting room. The fee is confirmed when we book. By appointment only, daily, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

12:10 · Dutcher Crossing Winery

About 10 minutes away. Chef Dino Bugica's restaurant in a historic building on Geyserville Avenue, with Neapolitan-style pizza from a wood-burning oven, handmade pasta and house-cured salumi; the menu changes every day. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:35 · Williamson Wines

About 10 minutes away. Bill and Dawn Williamson's Yoakim Bridge Estate and its century-old vineyard, where every tasting is seated and comes with food from the winery's chefs; the wines are sold only by the winery, never in stores or restaurants. Icon Wines with artisan cheeses is $60 and Icon Wines with a chef-prepared lunch is $75; allow about 90 minutes. Appointments recommended.

4:30 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 4:30 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Zichichi and Williamson are by appointment, so we confirm times with both when we book; Williamson's seated tasting with food runs about 90 minutes.

About $60 to $75 per person for Williamson, paid directly to the winery; Zichichi's and Dutcher Crossing's fees are to be verified upon reservation.
