About the Winery

The Giusti family came from San Pellegrinetto, Italy, about 150 years ago and founded Giusti Ranch & Vineyards in Forestville in 1875. Over the generations the ranch has grown olives, prunes, cherries, apples and wine grapes, and it has come back to its roots with grapes and olives. Sonoma County Winegrowers counts the family in its Century Club of growers farming for more than 100 years.

In 2000 the family planted 9 of the ranch's remaining 22 acres in the Russian River Valley to three clones of Pinot Noir. Most of the fruit is sold to Kosta Browne, which has bottled it under the Giusti Ranch vineyard designation, and select rows are kept back for the family's own label, Via Giusti Wines.

Via Giusti is a small family label with no tasting room or published visiting program, so it is a wine to look for rather than a place to visit. The Giusti Ranch Pinot Noir is easier to find through Kosta Browne. For a day in the same Forestville hills, we take guests to estates nearby that do open their doors.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a hotel such as The Sebastopol Inn or Farmhouse Inn.

10:00 · Pickup at The Sebastopol Inn or Farmhouse Inn

The Sebastopol Inn, in downtown Sebastopol, is about 20 minutes from Black Kite's tasting room in Freestone, and Farmhouse Inn, a 25-room country inn among the vineyards and redwoods of Forestville, about 35, so Farmhouse guests are picked up a little earlier. Since Via Giusti does not host visitors, this day takes you to three estates nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:20 · Black Kite Cellars

The first stop. Tom Birdsall and Rebecca Green Birdsall's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay house pours at Jasper House, the only tasting room in the historic coastal village of Freestone, with three tasting salons. Tastings of six wines take about 90 minutes; the fee is confirmed when we book. By appointment only.

12:00 · Senses Wines

About 10 minutes away. The Occidental label of three childhood friends, among them actor Max Thieriot, made by Thomas Rivers Brown from family vineyards first planted around 1989 near the coast. Visits are by inquiry, ideally three weeks ahead, and availability is limited; we arrange it, the address comes with the booking, and the fee is confirmed then.

1:35 · Lunch at Underwood Bar and Bistro

About 20 minutes away. A bistro in the village of Graton with red vinyl banquettes, a nickel-topped bar and an open-air patio. Lunch is served Wednesday to Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:55 · Russian River Vineyards

About 10 minutes away. A Forestville winemaking property with roots in the 1890s, revived in 2008 by fourth-generation farmer Gio Balistreri, who makes the wines, and with its own kitchen and a shaded, heated outdoor tasting area. The Library Tasting of red wines from the library collection, its rarest bottles, is $75, prepaid, for 2 to 6 guests. Open daily from 11:30 a.m.; reservations recommended.

3:55 · Back to your hotel

Back in Forestville by 4:05 p.m., or Sebastopol by 4:10 p.m.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. This day works Wednesday to Sunday, when Underwood serves lunch, which comes a little later than usual. Black Kite and Senses are by appointment, and we confirm times with each when we book.

About $75 per person for the Library Tasting at Russian River Vineyards; tasting fees at Black Kite and Senses are to be verified upon reservation. Each is paid directly to the winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
