Todd Williams, known as Dr. Toad, created Toad Hollow in 1993 with his wife, Francine, and his good friend and colleague Rodney Strong, and Toad Hollow Vineyards was founded in Sonoma County in 1994. His idea was "wine for the masses": wine as part of everyday life, not only for celebrations. Frankie Williams worked alongside Todd from 1997 and, after his death in 2007, took on all executive and operational responsibilities for the winery.
Rod Strong sourced well-farmed fruit from all over California and from little-known French wine regions, and the label still buys widely. The signature Unoaked Chardonnay, made in the same cold-fermented, stainless-steel style for 30 years, is currently labeled Mendocino County; alongside it are a Monterey County Pinot Noir, a Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, a Mendocino County Merlot and Risqué, a Pinot Gris from Oregon's Willamette Valley. Most bottles are priced under $20.
Toad Hollow has no tasting room, and its address is a post office box in Healdsburg. The wines are sold in stores, which the product finder on its website can locate, and online, with orders handled through WarRoom Cellars. For a day of tasting, we take guests to estates around Healdsburg and Windsor that do open their doors.
Toad Hollow does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:40 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Healdsburg or h2hotel.
Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, and h2hotel, a green-roofed hotel just off the Healdsburg plaza, are each about 25 minutes from Notre Vue, the first stop. Since Toad Hollow does not host visitors, this day takes you to three estates nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 25 minutes away. The Stein family's 710-acre estate between Windsor and Healdsburg, in the Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill appellations, with 16 grape varieties and tastings outdoors on the Block 23 Terrace or at the Lakeside Pavilion, looking over vineyards and oak woodland. The Terrace Tasting Flight of five estate wines is $25, about 90 minutes. Open Thursday to Monday from 11 a.m., last reservation mid-afternoon; reservations recommended.
About 20 minutes away. The Windsor brewery and pub of Russian River Brewing, which first brewed Pliny the Elder in 1999, with a full pub menu and a self-guided brewery tour. Open daily from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 20 minutes away. Al and Dina Lopez, who built Lowrider Magazine into the country's top automotive title, planted estate Cabernet Sauvignon on a Mayacamas ridgeline above Santa Rosa in 1999, and winemaker Belen Ceja makes the wines. The seated Vertical Tasting Flight lines up four vintages of the estate Cabernet side by side ($40); the Portfolio Tasting Flight is $25. Open Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
About 5 minutes away. Baron Ziegler's Sonoma Coast label, made by Rob Fischer, the winemaker behind Banshee, in a small tasting room on Center Street. The Single Vineyard Exploration of five Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs is $40, as is a five-wine Appellation Exploration. Open daily 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations encouraged, walk-ins as space allows.
Back in Healdsburg by 4:45 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of tasting. The Notre Vue terrace tasting takes about 90 minutes, so pickup is at 10:40, and the day works Thursday to Monday, when Notre Vue and Aldina are open.
About $90 to $105 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
