Estate wines poured in a converted redwood barn on the Russian River, at the end of a quiet lane, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Roger and Carmen Stuhlmuller bought 150 acres at the southwestern edge of Alexander Valley in 1982, land that was once part of Cyrus Alexander's 9,000-acre ranch. The property came with about 90 acres of vines planted in the 1970s, and for years the family sold its grapes to wineries such as Chateau Souverain and Simi.
Their son Fritz founded the winery in 1996 and by 2000 had turned the ranch's historic barn into an estate winery. The vineyard, bordered on the east by the Russian River, grows Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel on gravel, clay and volcanic soils and rocky, uplifted benchland. Zac Childers, who trained in New Zealand and worked at Torbreck in Australia, became winemaker in 2019.
Getting here is half the charm: the drive ends down a long lane through the vines, and the tasting room is in the redwood barn itself, with a bar where you can put a hand on the barrels and a patio over the vineyard. It is casual and friendly, dogs are welcome, and on weekday afternoons the winery hosts Yappy Hours for guests and their dogs.
$30 for the seated Estate Tasting of white and red estate wines. $45 for the Reserve Tasting.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of town, is about 25 minutes from Stuhlmuller, and Harmon Guest House, a boutique hotel just off the plaza, about 30, so we leave at 10:30 and arrive as the barn opens at 11. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
The Reserve Tasting ($45) or the seated Estate Tasting ($30) in the redwood barn.
About 20 minutes away. The Hawkes family has grown Cabernet Sauvignon in Alexander Valley since 1972, and the tasting room patio is shaded by wisteria, with the winery dog, Charles, usually on duty. The Estate Flight of four estate wines, ending with a single-vineyard Cabernet, is $35 on the patio, in the garden or at the bar, daily from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; the 90-minute Private Reserve Tasting of six Cabernets is $70.

Open every day except Wednesday, until 4 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. Dr. Elias Hanna, a cardiac surgeon, founded the winery in 1985, and his daughter Christine has led it since 1991. The VIP Seated Tasting on the veranda, looking out over Alexander Valley, pours five wines from the family's own vineyards for $40, about an hour; the Bismark Moon Mountain Flight is $55. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; reservations recommended.
Back in Healdsburg by 4:00 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Stuhlmuller closes on Tuesday and Jimtown on Wednesday, so this day works Thursday to Monday.
