Dr. Elias Hanna, a pioneering cardiac surgeon, bought 12 acres in the Russian River Valley in the late 1970s as a country escape, and he and his daughter Christine began making wine at home. The family turned the pastime into a business in 1985. Christine Hanna took the helm in 1991, moved the winery toward estate-grown fruit, and still leads it, with winemaker Jeff Hinchliffe.
Hanna farms five vineyard sites across four appellations: Home Ranch and Slusser Road in the Russian River Valley, the 88-acre Red Ranch for Bordeaux varieties here in Alexander Valley, the terraced Dry Creek Mountain Vineyard at 900 feet on Bradford Mountain, where Christine lives, and Bismark Mountain Vineyard high in the Mayacamas in the Moon Mountain District. The winery is known for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Hanna's Alexander Valley tasting room sits up on Highway 128 with a veranda that looks across the valley, and that view is the reason we bring guests here. Tastings are seated and hosted, walk-ins are welcome, and with three days' notice the winery sets up a picnic lunch with a flight of five wines under the big oak tree on the estate. Hanna also has a second tasting room in the Russian River Valley near Santa Rosa.
$40 for the VIP Seated Tasting of five wines on the veranda, about an hour. $50 for the Wine & Cheese Pairing and $55 for the Bismark Moon Mountain Flight, each about an hour. $75 for the Picnic Under The Big Oak Tree, a picnic lunch with a flight of five wines, about 90 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of town, is about 20 minutes from Hanna's Alexander Valley tasting room, and h2hotel, just off the Healdsburg plaza, about 25. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 10 minutes away. The Hawkes family has grown Cabernet Sauvignon in Alexander Valley since 1972, and the tasting room patio is shaded by wisteria, with the winery dog, Charles, usually on duty. The Estate Flight of four estate wines, ending with a single-vineyard Cabernet, is $35 on the patio, in the garden or at the bar, daily from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; the 90-minute Private Reserve Tasting of six Cabernets is $70.
About 15 minutes away. Chef Dino Bugica's restaurant in a historic building on Geyserville Avenue, with Neapolitan-style pizza from a wood-burning oven, handmade pasta and house-cured salumi; we like a table here because the menu changes every day. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 5 minutes away. The Mazzoni family has farmed this Geyserville land since 1931, and the fourth generation founded Zialena in 2012, fermenting estate Zinfandel and Cabernet in concrete tanks and eggs. The 1897 Tasting of five estate wines is poured on the patio over the family's 100-acre Mazzoni Vineyard, $40 and about 90 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; reservations appreciated.
Back in Healdsburg by 3:55 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
