About the Winery

Shone Farm is Santa Rosa Junior College's teaching farm in Forestville, the outdoor classroom for its viticulture and wine studies programs. In the fall of 2008 the college began making wine under its own Shone Farm label, a commercial winery that is also a teaching facility.

The farm has about 91 acres of planted wine grapes, among them Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and sells much of the fruit to wineries such as Hanna, Sonoma-Cutrer, La Crema, Francis Ford Coppola and Korbel. A one-acre teaching block holds 54 grape varieties and 14 rootstocks. The small-lot wines are made by consulting winemaker Pat Henderson, formerly of Kenwood Vineyards, with Wine Studies students, who work the harvest and crush, help design the labels and run the wine club.

The wines are sold online and through the Shone Farm wine club; the college does not publish a tasting room or visiting hours for the winery. For a day in this part of the valley, we take guests to estates nearby that do open their doors.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:10 a.m. from a hotel such as Farmhouse Inn or Hotel Healdsburg.

10:10 · Pickup at Farmhouse Inn or Hotel Healdsburg

Farmhouse Inn, a 25-room country inn among the vineyards and redwoods of Forestville, is about 15 minutes from Porter Creek, the first stop, and Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, about 20. Since Shone Farm Winery does not host visitors, this day takes you to three family wineries nearby that do. The day below runs about six hours; extra time is added by the hour.

10:30 · Porter Creek

About 15 minutes away. George Davis bonded an old barn on this Westside Road estate in 1982, and his son Alex, who trained in Burgundy, now farms its steep, certified organic slopes, including Pinot Noir planted in 1973. The Grand Tasting of one Chardonnay and four Pinot Noirs is $50, at the wine bar or at outdoor tables over the vines (an outdoor table adds $25). Open daily 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; book ahead, walk-ins as space allows.

11:55 · Harvest Moon Estate & Winery

About 25 minutes away. The Pitts family has grown grapes on Olivet Road since 1976, and winemaker Randy Pitts also makes méthode champenoise sparkling wine, poured as Tiny Bubbles. The seated Harvest Moon & Tiny Bubbles tasting of six wines is $40 to $50, with walk-in flights on the crush pad from $25. Open Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations required for 5 or more.

1:15 · Lunch at Willow Wood Market Cafe

About 20 minutes away. A café, soda fountain and general store at the center of Graton since 1995, serving down-home comfort food on a remodeled patio or inside. Lunch from 11:30 a.m., with brunch on Sundays. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:50 · Equality Vines

About 25 minutes away. Co-founded by Jim Obergefell, lead plaintiff in the U.S. Supreme Court marriage equality case, and Matt Grove, with donations from every release to equality causes, in a pet-friendly tasting room on Guerneville's Main Street. A tasting of five wines is $35. Open Friday and Saturday 1 to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.; reservations recommended, walk-ins welcome.

3:50 · Back to your hotel

Back in Forestville by 4:10 p.m., or Healdsburg by 4:35 p.m.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. This day works Friday to Sunday, when Equality Vines opens its Guerneville tasting room in the afternoon.

About $125 to $135 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
