About the Winery

The Serres story begins in 1872, when John P. Serres came to San Francisco and later moved his family to Sonoma County. The family has owned and run Serres Ranch since 1924, and it is now in its sixth generation of ownership. For decades the family has been known in Sonoma as winegrape growers, ranchers, farmers and builders; they still say, "Our handshake is our word."

The ranch sits where the mountains narrow the Valley of the Moon to its smallest point, and geothermal activity under the vines keeps it warmer than average and spares it from frost. For decades the family sold its grapes to well-known wineries; now the fifth generation also bottles Serres Ranch wines, all estate grown and all red or rosé, such as the Marshall Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend with Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The vineyards have been certified sustainable since 2015.

There is no public tasting bar. Visits are ranch tours by appointment, a chance to walk the vineyards with the family that farms them and taste the estate reds where they grow, which is the reason to come.

The Rhône Table pours their tiny-lot Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah side by side, then the GSM blend, with a cheese and charcuterie board, about 75 minutes ($75). The seated Wine Tasting Flight is $45 to $55, about 1 hour 15 minutes, in the art gallery or, April to October from Friday to Sunday, outdoors on the Oak Knoll over the vineyards. Reservations highly recommended; open daily 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

4:05 · Back to your hotel

Back in Sonoma by 4:15 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Serres Ranch is by appointment and Hamilton's Rhône Table needs 48 hours' notice, so we book both ahead. Salt+Stone does not serve lunch on Wednesday, so this day works every day but Wednesday.

About $120 to $130 per person in tasting fees for Hamilton Family Wines and Bartholomew, paid directly to each winery; the Serres Ranch fee is to be verified upon reservation.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
