About the Winery

Séamus is the Irish form of James, pronounced "shay-mus," and the winery is named for its principals, James Foley Sr. and James Foley Jr. It is a family-owned producer of about 2,500 cases a year that buys grapes vineyard by vineyard for each variety, and its wines are poured in restaurants in California and several other states, from New York to Nevada.

The range covers Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Merlot, rosé, a cuvée blend and a port-style dessert wine. The Olde Sonoma Cabernet comes from the vineyard across the street from the lounge, and the wines go into the local competitions every year: at the 2025 Sonoma County Harvest Fair the 2023 Buena Tierra Vineyard Chardonnay won Double Gold and the 2024 Solomon Vineyard Sonoma Valley Viognier a silver medal.

The Kenwood space is built as a lounge, not a typical tasting room: 1,200 square feet of comfortable furniture plus a patio, records to put on, and wines by the flight, glass or bottle, with two always on tap. Nobody hurries you; a tasting can run anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. There is also a private dining room, and on some evenings the lounge hosts events such as sushi-making classes paired with the wines.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Glen Ellen or Kenwood hotel such as Olea Hotel or Kenwood Inn & Spa.

10:00 · Pickup at Olea Hotel or Kenwood Inn & Spa

Olea Hotel, a small hotel on Warm Springs Road in Glen Ellen, and Kenwood Inn & Spa, on the Sonoma Highway in Kenwood, are each about 30 minutes from Coursey Graves, the first stop, high on Bennett Mountain. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:30 · Coursey Graves

About 30 minutes away. John and Denise Graves's estate about 1,500 feet up Bennett Mountain, where architect Charles Stinson set three buildings into the hillside above gardens and a pond. The Semi-Private Tasting is $75, about 60 minutes; the Private Vista Experience, with a charcuterie board and a dedicated host, is $110 for up to 6. By appointment only, seven days a week; 21 and over.

12:00 · Séamus Wines

About 30 minutes away. A flight in the lounge, right when the doors open at noon; the fee is confirmed when we book.

1:15 · Lunch at Glen Ellen Village Market

About 15 minutes away. The village grocery on Arnold Drive in Glen Ellen, with sandwiches made to order for lunch on the go. Open daily from 6 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:20 · Wellington Cellars

About 10 minutes away. The Belmonte family's Glen Ellen estate, with old-vine Zinfandel dating to 1882 and a tasting room redesigned in 2024; the best seats are under the olive trees beside the vineyard. The Vineyard Reserve Tasting & Tour pours six wines with a charcuterie board and a walk through the vines and the winery ($50); the Bar Tasting is $30. Open daily from 10 a.m.; the seated tastings are by reservation.

3:20 · Back to your hotel

Back in Kenwood by 3:30 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Séamus opens at noon and is by appointment on Monday, so this day works Tuesday to Sunday; Coursey Graves is by appointment, and we book it first. The village market makes an easy, casual lunch between the lounge and Wellington.

About $105 to $125 per person in tasting fees for Coursey Graves and Wellington Cellars, paid directly to each winery; the Séamus fee is to be verified upon reservation.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
