Brothers Andrew and Adam Mariani, fourth-generation California farmers, founded Scribe in 2007 on a property east of the town of Sonoma that pioneered pre-Prohibition winemaking in the valley. The estate was first established in 1858 by Emil Dresel and his brother Julius, who may have planted some of the first Riesling and Sylvaner vines in the United States. When the Marianis bought it, it was a struggling turkey farm.
The brothers replanted the land to vines beginning in 2008 and farm it as part of the larger ecosystem, and the wines are made with a light, non-interventionist hand so each one shows the site and the vintage. The Scribe Viticultural Society, the winery's membership, takes its idea from the wine society founded on the estate in the 1850s: members share in the growing and making of the wine, the ongoing revival of the estate and its dinners and gatherings.
Scribe is private. Visits to the estate are a benefit of membership, hosted in the old hacienda or as a picnic on the knoll, and there is no public tasting room. Guests who want to see it should plan ahead: we make the request on your behalf and fit the rest of the day around the time the estate offers.
Scribe does not publish a tasting fee. Visits are a benefit of Scribe Viticultural Society membership, which ships 4, 6 or 12 bottles each quarter.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Hanzell hosts guests Monday to Friday and closes for harvest in August and early September, so this day works on weekdays. Scribe hosts members only, so we confirm the visit before we build the rest of the day.
About $170 to $190 per person in tasting fees for Hanzell and The Donum Estate, paid directly to each winery. Scribe's member visit is arranged privately.
Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
