Max Reichwage grew up in Michigan, where his parents ran a small fermentation supply store for the home-brewing movement of the 1980s that grew into a wholesale supplier to breweries nationwide. He studied chemistry at the University of Michigan and viticulture and enology in graduate school at UC Davis, worked harvests in Napa, Emilia-Romagna, Sonoma, Tasmania and Burgundy, and published research on red wine fermentation in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture. In 2014 his family bought the Twin Hills property in Sebastopol, an apple ranch the Hurst family had farmed and packed from 1942 until 2010; the orchards had been abandoned and the old packing house was close to collapse.
Max now farms 24 acres of vines at Twin Hills and Mancini Ranch, and sells about half his grapes to wineries such as Carlisle, Littorai, Peay, Radio-Coteau, Ridge and Syntropy. The estate wines, about 2,000 cases a year, run from Pinot Noir and Zinfandel to rarer Gamay Noir and Carignane. Twin Hills is farmed organically and with as little irrigation as possible, fermentations are open-top and native, with some foot treading, and the reds are bottled unfined and unfiltered. The winery, finished in 2019, recycles water and makes its own nitrogen, and a dry-farmed organic orchard of heirloom apples planted in the late 1960s supplies a small amount of hard cider.
Guests sit down for a tasting of five wines in the new farmhouse tasting room, with views over West Sonoma County, and can add a cheese and charcuterie board. It is a chance to taste with a grower who makes wine from his own vines, on a working farm in the Sebastopol hills.
$40 per person for a seated tasting of five wines, waived with a purchase of four bottles.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
