Prophet & Poet

About the Winery

Prophet & Poet launched in 2025 as a partnership of actor and producer Jessica Biel with Justin and Rose Biel, winemaker Jesse Katz, and Chris and Ariel Jackson of Jackson Family Wines. Katz, who grew up traveling to great vineyards with his father, the photographer Andy Katz, studied at Fresno State, trained at Pétrus and Screaming Eagle, became head winemaker at Lancaster Estate in 2010 and now makes his own Aperture Cellars wines; Prophet & Poet is made at the Aperture Cellars facility on Old Redwood Highway in Healdsburg.

The fruit comes from the Jacksons' mountain vineyards in Sonoma County: Black Crown Cabernet Sauvignon from Monolith and Christopher's vineyards at 1,750 and 2,400 feet in Alexander Valley and Knights Valley; Mountain Sage, a Malbec-led blend from volcanic soils at Franz Creek; and two Chardonnays from 1,800 feet on Alexander Valley Mountain Estate, Ghost Cat from Upper Barn Vineyard and King Bird from Broken Road Vineyard. Lots are tiny: 221 cases of the 2021 Black Crown, 180 of Mountain Sage and fewer than 80 of each Chardonnay, about 900 cases in all for the inaugural vintage. International Wine Report gave the 2021 Black Crown and Mountain Sage 100 points and both Chardonnays 97.

Prophet & Poet sells by allocation: a purchase from the current release secures a place on the list and priority for future vintages, and the wines also appear on the lists of acclaimed restaurants. There is no tasting room or visiting program. For a day of sought-after Russian River Valley wines, we take guests to private and seated tastings nearby.

10:00 · Pickup at Hotel Healdsburg or Harmon Guest House

Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, and Harmon Guest House, a boutique hotel just off the plaza, are each about 25 minutes from CIRQ's hilltop estate. Since Prophet & Poet does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:25 · CIRQ Estate

About 25 minutes away. Michael Browne, who co-founded Kosta Browne in 1997, started CIRQ in 2009, and its home is a hilltop estate in the heart of the Russian River Valley with views in every direction; its 2023 Pinot Noir earned 100 points from Jonathan Cristaldi's Sonoma County Buyer's Guide. Visits are a private, limited experience, requested through the mailing list; the fee is not published, and we make the request for you.

11:50 · Convene by Dan Kosta

About 25 minutes away. Dan Kosta, co-founder of Kosta Browne, pours his newer Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made with winemaker Shane Finley, in a lounge at Bacchus Landing, a winery cooperative with an olive-tree courtyard. The Grail tasting of his single-vineyard Pinot Noirs is $65; fees for the Classically Convene tasting are confirmed when we book. Open Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations suggested on weekends.

12:55 · Lunch at Little Saint

About 5 minutes away. A plant-based restaurant, coffee bar and wine lounge on North Street in downtown Healdsburg, from owners Laurie and Jeff Ubben, with a farm of its own. Open daily from 8 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:25 · Harper's Rest

About 20 minutes away. Named for Reuben Harper, an 1850s hops farmer who rests among the vines under a centuries-old California bay laurel, this Westside Road estate was Arista's home until 2025 and now farms Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with regenerative organic methods. The Estate Expressions Tasting of four wines is a $30 deposit per person, 60 to 90 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in summer, Wednesday to Sunday from November through April; reservations encouraged.

3:25 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 3:45 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Convene opens Thursday to Monday, so this day works Thursday to Monday; CIRQ's private visit is requested through its mailing list, and we confirm it when we book.

About $95 per person in tasting fees for Convene's Grail tasting and Harper's Rest, paid directly to each winery; CIRQ's fee is to be verified upon reservation.
