About the Winery

Pezzi King made its name in the Jim Rowe years; as owner Ken Wilson puts it, its rich, fruit-forward 1995 Zinfandel "turned the local winemaking world upside down" and set a new standard for the grape. Ken and Diane Wilson, who began buying land in western Dry Creek Valley in the early 1980s and now farm more than 600 acres of hillside vineyards, later bought the winery, kept the name and its winemaker, and added it to the family of wineries they own across Sonoma, Mendocino and Anderson Valley.

The estate is a 137-acre farm in the hills above Dry Creek Valley with 65 acres of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, farmed sustainably, with dry farming, cover crops and owl boxes. Winemaker Chris Barrett took over with the 2008 harvest; he has won five sweepstakes awards, including a rare double sweepstakes at the 2012 Sonoma County Harvest Fair and the 2015 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition sweepstakes for the Row 14 Reserve Zinfandel.

On weekends the winery opens the estate itself: tastings on a deck next to the pond, with a flight of regular and reserve wines and a plate of charcuterie and seasonal cheese. There are only two seatings a day, so it feels like a private visit. During the week, Pezzi King pours at its tasting room on Front Street in downtown Healdsburg.

Tasting Fees

$45 for the Estate Tasting, a flight of regular and reserve wines with a charcuterie and seasonal cheese plate ($35 for members of sister clubs, $25 for Pezzi King club members). Downtown, $20, waived with a two-bottle purchase per person.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:40 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Healdsburg or Harmon Guest House.

10:40 · Pickup at Hotel Healdsburg or Harmon Guest House

Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, and Harmon Guest House, a boutique hotel just off the plaza, are each about 20 minutes from the Pezzi King estate, up in the hills off West Dry Creek Road. The day below runs about six and a half hours; extra time is added by the hour.

11:00 · Pezzi King

The Estate Tasting on the deck by the pond, with charcuterie and cheese ($45). We allow about 90 minutes.

12:45 · Lunch at Dry Creek General Store

About 15 minutes away. A country store since 1881 at the crossroads of Dry Creek Valley, with a deli for sandwiches, soups and salads, a front porch over the valley and a garden out back. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:05 · Williamson Wines

About 10 minutes away. Bill and Dawn Williamson's Yoakim Bridge Estate and its century-old vineyard, where every tasting is seated and comes with food from the winery's chefs; the wines are sold only by the winery, never in stores or restaurants. Icon Wines with artisan cheeses is $60, about 90 minutes. Appointments recommended.

3:40 · Dutcher Crossing Winery

About 5 minutes away. Debra Mathy's family-run winery at the confluence of Dry Creek and Dutcher Creek, in a 1900s-style farmhouse winery whose breezeway frames the whole northern end of the valley; guests love the view from the patio. The winery does not publish its tasting fee; we confirm it when we book. Reservations recommended; open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

4:40 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 5:05 p.m.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The estate opens only on Saturday and Sunday, at 11 a.m. or 12:30 p.m., so this is a weekend day that starts a little later and ends around 5. On a weekday we can take you to the downtown tasting room instead.

About $105 per person at Pezzi King and Williamson, paid directly to each winery; the Dutcher Crossing tasting fee is to be verified upon reservation.
