About the Winery

Jack and Dorothy Mounts bought their first 60 acres in Dry Creek Valley, a prune orchard, in 1946, after 30 years in Hawaii, and in 1952 added 40 acres that came with 6 acres of Zinfandel. Their son Richard, finishing a soil science degree at Cal Poly, talked them out of prunes, and in 1967 he planted Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Richard has farmed wine grapes for more than 50 years and received the Sonoma County Grape Commission's Viticulture Award of Excellence.

His son David, a Fresno State viticulture graduate who worked at Sonoma-Cutrer and managed vineyards in Napa Valley, launched Mounts Family Winery in early 2005 with his wife, Lana, and his parents; the family's wine caves were built the same year. The Mounts still sell most of their fruit to wineries in Sonoma County and Napa Valley, and they grow dozens of varieties on the 140-acre estate, from old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah to newer Rhône and Italian grapes.

Visits are relaxed outdoor tastings looking over the vineyards, with small-lot estate wines under the Mounts and Verah labels. It is a farmer's winery rather than a showplace, and a good way to taste what Dry Creek Valley growers have been doing for generations: Rhône and Italian varieties, old-vine Zinfandel and Bordeaux reds, all from the family's own land.
