Jack and Ann Seifrick were looking for land for a new winery in 2011 when they sat with a bottle of wine, watching the sun set over this site on Dry Creek Road, and the name CAST came out of that evening. They opened the winery in 2012 with co-founders John Miller, his wife, Jacki, and Jim Demuth, Jack's college roommate at Ohio State.
Winemaker Ashley Herzberg, a chemical engineer by training, learned her craft in the lab at Owl Ridge and as assistant winemaker at Mauritson before setting out as a consultant in 2011. The estate vineyard, 5 acres of Zinfandel and an acre of Petite Sirah, was planted in 2000 by the late grower Ulises Valdez with cuttings from the St. Peter's Church Vineyard, and it is now certified organic; the Old Vine Zinfandel comes from the Watson vineyard next door, planted in the early 1970s. CAST likes to experiment, with sparkling wines, a Creative Lab series and wine cocktails alongside Zinfandel, Cabernet and a Meritage.
Tastings are hosted on a hillside above the vineyard with Dry Creek Valley spread out below, and there is plenty of choice: CAST Exploration of five current releases, a sparkling flight, a 90-minute tour and tasting from bottle and barrel, or the private Prestige Experience with small-production wines, barrel samples and local meats and cheeses. A sabering lesson, opening a bottle of CAST sparkling wine with a saber and sharing it, can be added to most tastings, and it is a fun way to mark a birthday or anniversary.
From $40 for CAST Exploration, five current releases, 60 to 90 minutes. From $50 for The Art of Sparkling, four sparkling wines. From $75 for the 90-minute Tour & Tasting from bottle and barrel. From $125 for the private Prestige Experience with small-production wines, barrel samples, meats and cheeses, 90 minutes or more. Add a sabering lesson for $75, with the bottle, or caviar for $125 a tin with 72 hours' notice. Wine cocktail and zero-proof flights from $25 to $32; the Vineyard Picnic, with three bottles, from $200.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

About 20 minutes away. The Martorana family bought its land on West Dry Creek Road in 1983, and today certified organic vineyards and olive trees surround a small winery where tastings can be poured in the wine cave; Gio Martorana makes Olio di Gio olive oil on a traditional press from Italy. Tasting fees are confirmed when we book. Open Friday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; walk-ins welcome up to 10 guests, reservations recommended.
About 25 minutes away. Santi and Virginia Catelli opened this Geyserville restaurant in 1936, and their granddaughter, chef Domenica Catelli, carries on the family's handmade Italian cooking. Open Wednesday to Sunday from noon; we reserve the table for you. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. One of Dry Creek Valley's most respected Zinfandel houses: Doug Nalle's 1987 Zinfandel earned 92 points from Wine Spectator, and the 2019 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel made its Top 100. Tastings are on the patio behind the living-roof cellar, a concrete arch covered in soil and rosemary, often poured by a member of the family. A flight of six wines is $35. Open Saturday from noon to about 4 p.m., and Wednesday to Friday by reservation.
Back in Healdsburg by 3:45 p.m., or Geyserville by 3:55, within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Martorana opens Friday to Monday, and Nalle hosts by reservation on Fridays and opens Saturday afternoons, so this day works on a Friday or Saturday.
About $75 to $160 per person in tasting fees at CAST and Nalle, paid directly to each winery; Martorana's tasting fee is to be verified upon reservation.
