About the Winery

Martha Stoumen spent eight years apprenticing at wineries around the world, including in Italy, before setting out in 2014 as a self-funded, first-generation winemaker to answer a simple question: what does California taste like? Her company was founded on what she calls a winemaking culture of patience, and today it makes about 8,000 cases a year, nearly two dozen different wines, in a Healdsburg winery shared with friends.

The grapes are mostly Mediterranean varieties from warm, breezy places that suit natural farming: growers around Ukiah in Mendocino County, in Contra Costa County and in Suisun Valley, plus two head-trained, dry-farmed vineyards she leases, which supply about a quarter of the wine. Vineyards are farmed with compost rather than synthetic fertilizer, and every wine ferments with native yeast. The lineup runs from Nero d'Avola and Carignan to Zinfandel, Vermentino and the Post Flirtation red and white.

After years without a home of her own, Stoumen opened a tasting room on Center Street in downtown Healdsburg, a space built with local craftspeople as a homage to her Northern California childhood and to Italy. The SF Chronicle called her one of California natural wine's most beloved figures, and Sonoma Magazine called the room one for night owls: it is open until 7 most evenings and until 9 on Friday and Saturday. You can taste a flight or order by the glass or bottle.
