About the Winery

Leo Steen Wines is the label of Leo Hansen, who grew up in Denmark as the son of a chef and hotelier, trained as a sommelier, and in 1997 became wine director at Kong Hans, Copenhagen's first Michelin-starred restaurant. Scouting California wines for that list brought him here, and in 1999 he moved to Sonoma County to learn winemaking. He became winemaker at Stuhlmuller Vineyards in the Alexander Valley in 2004, the same year he founded Leo Steen.

The wines are made with a hands-off approach: spontaneous fermentation, little or no sulfur, and aging in concrete, cask or seasoned oak. Chenin Blanc is the specialty, in three styles plus Bubbles by Steen, a traditional-method sparkling Chenin Blanc. The rest of the list includes Chardonnay, a biodynamic Rosé of Grenache from Rose Ranch in the Sonoma Valley, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, from organic, biodynamic and sustainable vineyards in Sonoma, Mendocino, Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara.

Guests taste at the Drink Tasting Room on Front Street, at the south edge of downtown Healdsburg, where walk-ins are welcome Friday to Sunday. It is an easy stop to pair with lunch in town, and Leo also hosts private tastings by request. We confirm current details when we book.

Tasting Fees
