About the Winery

La Cienega was founded by Werner and Helle Siegert, immigrants from Austria and Denmark who met in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1965. In 1994 they found 43 acres in the southeastern corner of the Alexander Valley, just off Chalk Hill Road, and named it after a hacienda they had loved in Ecuador. They planted 16 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1997, and for nearly two decades after the first harvest in 2001 sold the grapes to Napa and Sonoma wineries.

In 2015 their daughter Katja and her husband Sam Newman joined to create the family label. The inaugural 2018 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was made with Foppiano Winery and winemaker Nova Perrill and released in fall 2020. Today the certified sustainable estate makes estate Cabernets, red blends and rosé, with names such as Helle's Harvest, Werner's Reserve and Singing Angels, and the family calls its circle of women leaders the Ladies Round Table.

There is no tasting room. Wines are sold online and through the wine club, and the vineyard opens only for occasional events, such as its September harvest day and Alexander Valley Wine Week sessions. The day below stays in the Alexander Valley and Healdsburg, at three estates that host every week.

Tasting Fees

La Cienega does not offer regular tastings; events are ticketed separately.

On the day below, tastings are $90 at Jordan, $45 at Medlock Ames and $40 at Hanna, paid directly to each winery.

Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

The day runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
