About the Winery

Jupiter Wine Company is the work of two friends from the restaurant and wine trade. Michael Richardson spent about 30 years in hospitality, most of them in Las Vegas. Thomas DeBiase moved to Sonoma County from New Jersey in 2006 and worked in wine and restaurant programs, joining Idlewild Wines in 2018. In the middle of the pandemic Thomas called Michael and asked if he wanted to make some wine.

Jupiter focuses entirely on Italian grape varieties grown in California, such as Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Vermentino. The grapes come from growers who farm without synthetic sprays where possible, including Fox Hill Vineyard on the Talmage Bench in Mendocino County, Santo Giordano Vineyard in Carneros and Rancho Coda in the Russian River Valley. Fermentations are spontaneous with native yeasts, the wines are neither fined nor filtered, and sulfur is used sparingly. Part of the profits is invested in bonds that fund affordable housing for working families.

Jupiter has no tasting room; its wines are made at a shared winery facility on Hassett Lane near Geyserville and sold online, through its wine club and to its mailing list. For a day in the same part of Sonoma County, we take guests to small producers nearby that do pour for visitors.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Trio or Hotel Healdsburg.

10:00 · Pickup at Hotel Trio or Hotel Healdsburg

Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of Healdsburg, is about 15 minutes from Crux, and Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, about 20. Since Jupiter Wine Company does not host visitors, this day takes you to three small producers nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:20 · Crux Winery

About 15 minutes away. Neighbors Steve Gower and Brian Callahan went from home winemaking to founding Crux in 2012, and they pour their small-batch Rhône wines themselves in the Crux Barrel Room. Appointments last about an hour, with 6 to 8 wines and plenty of time for questions; the fee is confirmed when we book.

11:45 · Stuhlmuller Vineyards

About 25 minutes away. A family estate on land that was once part of Cyrus Alexander's ranch, reached down a long lane through the vines; the tasting room is in the ranch's historic redwood barn, with a patio over the vineyard. The seated Estate Tasting is $30 and the Reserve Tasting $45. Open 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Tuesday; reservations appreciated.

1:00 · Lunch at Jimtown and Then Sum

About 15 minutes away. A café on Highway 128 in the middle of Alexander Valley, serving breakfast, brunch and lunch, with tables inside and out. Open every day except Wednesday, until 4 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:10 · Mercury Wine

About 10 minutes away. Brad Beard founded Mercury in 2009 to make European-style blends in the manner of Bordeaux, Rioja and the Rhône from Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley grapes, and he is often in the tasting room himself. A tasting is $25. Open daily, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations requested, not required.

3:10 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 3:25 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Stuhlmuller closes Tuesday and Jimtown closes Wednesday, so this day works Thursday to Monday. Crux is by appointment, and we confirm it first.

About $55 to $70 per person for Stuhlmuller and Mercury; Crux's tasting fee is to be verified upon reservation.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
