About the Winery

Brad Beard founded Mercury Wine in 2009 with a simple idea: bring the style, subtlety and elegance of European wines to some of the best grapes in Northern California. He still makes the wines and is often part of the experience, from the tasting room to the wine trips he leads, such as a cruise on the Rhône.

Mercury specializes in blends in the styles of Bordeaux, Rioja and the Rhône, and in small lots of varieties such as Tempranillo and Mourvèdre, along with unusual white wines like Sauvignon Musqué. Most of the grapes come from Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley, with the occasional interesting vineyard from elsewhere in California.

The tasting room is on Geyserville Avenue in the small downtown of Geyserville, a relaxed place where guests can taste through wines they won't find in most tasting rooms. It is open every day, reservations are requested but not required, and Oliver, the winery dog, is usually on hand. It makes an easy, friendly stop between appointment tastings at the bigger estates nearby.

Tasting Fees

$25 per person for a tasting, waived with a two-bottle purchase.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:20 a.m. from a hotel such as Hotel Healdsburg or Geyserville Inn.

9:20 · Pickup at Hotel Healdsburg or Geyserville Inn

Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, is about 40 minutes from William Gregory, our first stop, and Geyserville Inn, at the north end of Geyserville, about 30. Mercury opens at 11, so we start up north. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · William Gregory Winery

About 40 minutes away. Retired Air Force and American Airlines pilot Bill Pesonen farms ten acres of hillside vines and two acres of olives near Asti, and has sold grapes to Jordan, Silver Oak and St. Francis. He pours his estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah himself at private tastings and asks guests to reserve a couple of hours. By reservation; the fee is confirmed when we book.

12:00 · Mercury Wine

About 30 minutes away. A tasting of the current blends and unusual whites ($25, waived with a two-bottle purchase).

1:05 · Lunch at Diavola

About 5 minutes away. Chef Dino Bugica's restaurant in a historic building on Geyserville Avenue, with Neapolitan-style pizza from a wood-burning oven, handmade pasta and house-cured salumi. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:35 · Vérité

About 25 minutes away. Jess Jackson's dream of a wine to rival the world's best, where vigneron Pierre Seillan builds three Bordeaux-style blends, La Muse, La Joie and Le Désir, from small blocks across Sonoma County. The Estate Tasting of the three current wines and one library vintage, with curated accoutrements, is $250 and takes about 2 hours. By prior appointment only.

4:35 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 5:05 p.m.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. William Gregory's private tasting and Vérité's Estate Tasting are both long, so this is a fuller day, from 9:20 a.m. to about 5:05 p.m.; extra time is added by the hour. Diavola is a few doors from Mercury.

About $275 per person in tasting fees for Mercury and Vérité; William Gregory's fee is to be verified upon reservation. Each is paid directly to the winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
