About the Winery

Hearth is a small family-and-friends wine label built around its Sonoma Valley estate, where Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are grown on an intimate scale. The idea, in the winery's words, is great wine shared with friends, and every step of growing and winemaking is done by hand. The winery does not publish the names of its owners.

Hearth works small lots from three sites: the estate in Sonoma Valley; Helena Vista, a 22-acre vineyard in Knights Valley at the base of Mount Saint Helena, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Syrah; and Reynoso Ranch in Alexander Valley along the Russian River, for Sauvignon Blanc. What sets it apart is the cellar work with yeast: Hearth uses fermentation and yeast choices deliberately, to reveal rather than cover the character of each vineyard.

Current releases are the 2023 estate Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2025 Emmy's Rosé from Helena Vista and Reynoso Sauvignon Blanc. Hearth has no tasting room and publishes no visiting program; the way in is its list, Join the Hearth, which shares new releases, tastings, dinners and the occasional invitation. For a day in the valley, we take you instead to three estates that host guests.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:50 a.m. from a Sonoma hotel such as Ledson Hotel or MacArthur Place.

9:50 · Pickup at Ledson Hotel or MacArthur Place

Ledson Hotel, on the east side of the Sonoma Plaza, and MacArthur Place, a few blocks south of the plaza, are each about 5 minutes from Sojourn Cellars, the first stop. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Sojourn Cellars

Since Hearth does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after wineries nearby that do. About 5 minutes away. Craig Haserot and Erich Bradley's small Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet house, which began in 2001 with about a hundred cases of Cabernet and now sells mostly to its allocation list. The seated Comparative Tasting sets the same grape from different regions side by side, about an hour ($45). By appointment, daily from 10 a.m.; reservations prepaid online.

11:15 · Berthoud Winery

About 15 minutes away. A Swiss family's six-acre vineyard west of town, where Mike Berthoud, once winemaker at Arrowood, makes Merlot, Bordeaux blends and a rare Chasselas in a wine barn built around 1919, with open-top redwood vats and a 19th-century basket press. A visit is a tour of the vines and barn with the family, for up to 8 guests, confirmed by email; the fee is confirmed when we book.

12:45 · Lunch at the girl & the fig

About 15 minutes away. Sondra Bernstein's restaurant on the Sonoma Plaza, serving French country cooking from a seasonal menu, with cheese and charcuterie, a Rhône-focused wine list and a garden patio. Open from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:10 · Peter Cellars

About 10 minutes away. Peter Mauel's small estate winery on a Carneros vineyard on Broadway, where every wine is made and sold, with bocce and the winery dogs beside the olive grove. The Winemaker Experience, a hands-on session with Peter himself, is $45, and the Estate Tasting $27.50. By appointment.

3:10 · Back to your hotel

Back in Sonoma by 3:20 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a relaxed day. Berthoud tours are confirmed by the family by email, and Peter Cellars is by appointment, so we set both times when we book.

About $90 per person in tasting fees for Sojourn and Peter Cellars, paid directly to each winery. Berthoud's tour fee is to be verified upon reservation.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
