About the Winery

Peter Mauel grew up in the United Kingdom and spent long stretches at wine houses in Burgundy and Bordeaux before moving to California in the early 1990s for an MBA and a career in software. Around 2000 he turned to winemaking full time, studied enology at UC Davis and made his first vintage in 2003.

In 2010 he bought the Carneros Estate Vineyard on Broadway and built the estate winery where all Peter Cellars wines are made and poured. The wines, Carneros Pinot Noir and Merlot, an estate rosé and Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, follow French small-lot methods: hand sorting, open-top fermenters punched down by hand and only French oak. Production is very small, and the wines are sold only from the winery.

There are three ways to visit. The Estate Tasting is a relaxed hour with five wines overlooking the vineyard and olive grove, with bocce and the winery dogs, Harry and Meghan. The Winemaker Experience is a hands-on session with Peter himself. The newest, the Vineyard Lounge, welcomes guests to a historic Carneros Pinot Noir vineyard for the first time in more than 50 years, with lounge seating in a pavilion over the vines and pond and original Martini Pinot Noir vines planted in 1974.

Tasting Fees

$27.50 for the Estate Tasting. $45 for the Winemaker Experience with owner and winemaker Peter Mauel. $45 for the Vineyard Lounge at the historic Carneros vineyard.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
