About the Winery

Giuseppe Mazzoni came to California from Carrara, Italy, and worked at the Italian Swiss Colony in Asti in 1897. During Prohibition he and his brother-in-law, Abramo Trusendi, made jug wine in a barn in Asti, and the family has farmed its Geyserville property since 1931. His sons Fred and Jim made wine there into the 1970s, and siblings Mark and Lisa Mazzoni, the fourth generation, founded Zialena in 2012. It is named for their great-aunt Lena, famous in the family for her ravioli; her ravioli stamp is on every label.

The 120-acre estate lies on the Alexander Valley floor near the Russian River, with about 100 acres of vines. Its 20 acres of Zinfandel go back to vines from 1905, propagated as the Mazzoni Clone, and 70 acres are Cabernet Sauvignon; the family also sells fruit to Jordan and Kendall-Jackson. Mark, winemaker and vineyard manager, ferments the estate wines in ten concrete tanks and concrete eggs, and the winery runs on solar power. In 2025 the Sonoma County Winegrowers inducted the family into its Century Club.

Tastings are seated on the patio with views across the vineyard, relaxed and open to families and leashed dogs. The 1897 Tasting pours five estate wines, and the Heritage Tour takes a small group into the Zinfandel vines and the concrete cellar. Zialena is known for Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Sauvignon Blanc fermented in concrete eggs.

Tasting Fees

$40 for the 1897 Tasting of five wines on the patio, 90 minutes. $150 for the Heritage Tour, seven wines over two hours or more, for 2 to 4 guests at 10:30 a.m. $20 for the seasonal Harvest Break cellar experience, 60 minutes, at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
