About the Winery

Nick Goldschmidt was born and educated in New Zealand, graduating with distinction in horticulture from Lincoln University in 1982 and training in oenology at Roseworthy in South Australia. After harvests in New Zealand, Australia, California and Chile, he and his wife, Yolyn, settled in Healdsburg in 1990, when he joined Simi as associate winemaker. He became chief winemaker in 1991 and spent 13 years there, building the reputation of the Simi Reserve Cabernet. He later oversaw winemaking at Allied Domecq Wines USA and then Beam Estates, whose wineries included Clos du Bois, Buena Vista and Gary Farrell.

Nick and Yolyn started their own label in 1998. Every Goldschmidt Vineyards wine is 100 percent varietal and from a single vineyard, chiefly Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley and from Oakville in Napa Valley: the Katherine Goldschmidt Cabernet from Stonemason Hill and the Yoeman Vineyard Cabernet in Alexander Valley, the Yardstick Cabernet from Ruth's Reach in Oakville, and the Chelsea Goldschmidt Merlot. The daughters' silhouettes appear on the labels, each colored to suit her personality, and the couple's five children have all worked harvest and crush. "We are trying to make the best single vineyard wines from the best properties that we know," Nick says.

Goldschmidt Vineyards has no tasting room: its website lists only a post office box in Healdsburg and the family's contacts, with no tours, tastings or visitor address. The wines are sold through the online shop and wine club. For a day built around Alexander Valley Cabernet country, we take guests to family estates nearby that do open their doors.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:30 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as Hotel Healdsburg or h2hotel.

9:30 · Pickup at Hotel Healdsburg or h2hotel

Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, and h2hotel, just off the Healdsburg plaza, are each about 30 minutes from Calluna, on a hilltop above Windsor. Since Goldschmidt Vineyards does not host visitors, this day takes you to three family estates nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Calluna Vineyards

The first stop. A tasting at David and Marla Jeffrey's hilltop vineyard home in Chalk Hill, planted from 2005 to the five red Bordeaux varieties, with views from the Russian River Valley to Mount St. Helena ($50, waived with a purchase).

11:45 · Pastori Winery

About 45 minutes away. A family winery one mile north of Geyserville, where the Pastoris have grown grapes since the early 1900s; the fourth generation, Paolo Pastori Ng, makes Old Vine Zinfandel and a two-barrel Centurian Zinfandel from a block planted in 1914. Tastings by reservation at the old-school family winery; the fee is confirmed when we book.

12:55 · Lunch at Diavola

About 10 minutes away. Chef Dino Bugica's restaurant in a historic building on Geyserville Avenue, with Neapolitan-style pizza from a wood-burning oven, handmade pasta and house-cured salumi. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:10 · J. Rickards Winery

About 10 minutes away. Jim and Eliza Rickards' family farm at the end of Chianti Road, where Zinfandel vines planted in 1908 still grow and the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon goes to Silver Oak for its Alexander Valley wine. Seated tastings look out over the vineyard, and a reservation can include a walk in the vines. The Wine Flight is $20, waived with a two-bottle purchase. Monday to Saturday, final seating at 3 p.m.

3:10 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 3:35 p.m.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. J. Rickards pours Monday to Saturday, so this day works on those days. Calluna and Pastori are by appointment, and we confirm times with each family when we book.

About $70 per person for Calluna ($50) and J. Rickards ($20), each waived with a purchase; Pastori's fee is to be verified upon reservation. Each is paid directly to the winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
