About the Winery

Gehricke is the label of August Sebastiani, a fourth-generation member of one of California's oldest wine families and president of 3 Badge Beverage Corporation in Sonoma, where he lives with his family. Growing up in Sonoma, he spent his childhood exploring the vineyards of family friends and the dusty country roads around town that led to forgotten vineyards, and Gehricke is named as a tribute to one of those roads.

The wines are small lots made with minimal intervention, each meant to show the sub-region it comes from. The Single Vineyard Series runs across Sonoma County: Chalk Ridge Vineyard Chardonnay, Rodgers Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir, Upper East Side Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, a Los Carneros rosé, and Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Zinfandel.

The tasting room is in the 3 Badge firehouse a block from the plaza, a historic building with plenty of room, and it has an easygoing, neighborhood feel; on Fridays a food truck parks outside in the evening. For something quieter, the Private Vineyard tasting starts in the Stone Room with a flight of small-lot wines and a seasonal artisan cheese board. Walk-ins and large groups are welcome.

Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Gehricke offers tastings of its Single Vineyard Series and a Private Vineyard tasting with a seasonal cheese board.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 11:35 a.m. from a Glen Ellen hotel such as Gaige House or Olea Hotel.

11:35 · Pickup at Gaige House or Olea Hotel

Gaige House, a Japanese-inspired inn along Calabazas Creek in Glen Ellen, and Olea Hotel, a small hotel on Warm Springs Road in Glen Ellen, are each about 25 minutes from Gehricke. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

12:00 · Gehricke Wines

A tasting of the Single Vineyard Series in the firehouse (fee confirmed when we book). We plan about an hour.

1:05 · Lunch at the girl & the fig

About 5 minutes away. Sondra Bernstein's restaurant on the Sonoma Plaza, serving French country cooking from a seasonal menu, with cheese and charcuterie, a Rhône-focused wine list and a garden patio. Open from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:35 · Talisman Wine

About 25 minutes away. Scott and Marta Rich's Pinot Noir house; Scott was once winemaker at Etude. They pour in the former Roma Hotel, the oldest commercial building in Glen Ellen, around a big table made from a Hawaiian mango tree. Every flight is seated and about 90 minutes: the Pinot Noir Terroir Tasting of six vineyard sites is $45, and The Ancient Method, foot-trodden whole-cluster Pinot Noir beside the same grapes made the usual way, $65. Open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; appointments encouraged, walk-ins welcome.

4:15 · Wellington Cellars

About 10 minutes away. The Belmonte family's estate on Dunbar Road in Glen Ellen, with old-vine Zinfandel dating to 1882 and an olive grove beside the vines, where they make small-lot Bordeaux-style blends. In the Owners Tasting, Vittorio and Henry Belmonte host you themselves ($130). By reservation; open daily from 10 a.m.

5:25 · Back to your hotel

Back in Glen Ellen by 5:30 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Gehricke opens at noon, Thursday to Sunday, so this day starts later, works Thursday to Sunday and ends around 5:30. We confirm Wellington's late Owners Tasting when booking.

About $175 to $195 per person in tasting fees for Talisman and Wellington Cellars; Gehricke's fee is to be verified upon reservation. Fees are paid directly to each winery.
