About the Winery

Enkidu takes its name from an ancient Sumerian legend, in which the gods sent a wild man out of the wilderness to confront a ruthless king and, in the end, befriend him and make him a better ruler. Founder and winemaker Phillip Staehle, who had his own wine collection at 18, built the winery around that spirit of wild, principled purity, and it has worked with its vineyard partners since as far back as 2005.

The winemaking is hands-off. Grapes are sustainably farmed, hand-picked and hand-sorted; the reds ferment on native yeast rather than commercial strains; nothing is added that is not already in the wine, no colorants, flavorings or unnatural preservatives; and the barrels are all French oak, with older, neutral barrels saved for wines such as Syrah. The winery also makes it a point to pay a fair wage and to work only with partners who do the same.

Enkidu has moved its tastings to Brick & Mortar Custom Crush on the south side of Healdsburg, and the setting is the draw: a small patio and an indoor tasting corner in the middle of a working production facility, with equipment for sparkling and still wine and a bottling line. The team is happy to show guests around, so there is always something to see, and they will swap a wine or two on the menu to suit your palate.

Tasting Fees

$35 for the Classic Tasting Experience of five small-production wines. $55 for the 90+ Point Wine Tasting Experience of five wines rated 90 points or more.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:55 a.m. from a Healdsburg hotel such as The Madrona or h2hotel.

10:55 · Pickup at The Madrona or h2hotel

The Madrona, a 24-room hotel on a historic estate on Westside Road, and h2hotel, a green-roofed hotel just off the Healdsburg plaza, are each about 5 minutes from Enkidu, at Brick & Mortar Custom Crush on the south side of town. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Enkidu Wines

The Classic Tasting ($35) or the 90+ Point tasting ($55) on the patio, with a look around the production floor, about an hour.

12:10 · De La Montanya

About 10 minutes away. A family winery in a barn off Westside Road, founded by Dennis and Tina De La Montanya, who make small lots of more than 30 varieties, from one barrel to twelve, out of 200 acres of family vineyards. Guests taste at the bar or seated in the garden; the $30 tasting fee is waived with a bottle purchase. Walk-ins welcome, open daily 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

1:20 · Lunch at Bravas Bar de Tapas

About 10 minutes away. James Beard finalists Mark and Terri Stark's tapas bar on Center Street, steps from the Healdsburg plaza, with paella, Spanish wines and tables indoors or outside. Open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:00 · Kokomo Winery

About 15 minutes away. Erik Miller's winery at Timber Crest Farms, named for his hometown of Kokomo, Indiana, and made with grower Randy Peters. Each seated tasting is a 90-minute flight of five wines with a dedicated host, in the Cellar Lounge among the barrels or on the patio ($30). Seatings daily at 11 a.m., noon, 1, 2 and 3 p.m.; reservations recommended.

4:30 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 4:45 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Enkidu opens at 11, Wednesday to Saturday, so this day starts at 10:55, works Wednesday to Saturday and ends around 4:45, with a long lunch before Kokomo's 3 p.m. seating.

About $95 to $115 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
