Tastings in the Grand Room of a 23,000-square-foot cave, from the family that pioneered CleanWine, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Robert and PJ Rex met at Berkeley in 1968. Robert, a chemistry graduate and backyard mechanic, kept PJ's Italian sports cars running, and she thanked him with a winemaking kit; his first wine, made in a Berkeley garage in 1972, won Best of Show at the California State Fair. In 1982 the couple bought Deerfield Ranch in Glen Ellen, married there and turned its horse barn into their first winery, and in 2000 they bought 47 acres on Highway 12 in Kenwood to expand. The winery is still family owned and run, making about 20,000 cases a year.
Robert Rex is the winemaker and the pioneer of what the winery calls CleanWine, made to be low in sulfites and low in histamines; his motto is "Wine should be good and good for you," and he can often be seen around the winery. The vineyards are farmed organically, and the seasonal Vineyard Tour explains the biodynamic approach before a look at the production floor.
Everything here happens underground. The wines age in a 23,000-square-foot cave, and the tasting room is the Grand Room at its heart, so even the Signature Tasting is poured among the barrels. The Reserve Tasting adds small-batch, aged wines and footage of the cave being dug, which guests enjoy. The winery is right on the Sonoma Highway in Kenwood, minutes from the inns of Kenwood and Glen Ellen, and it also hosts its own events, from comedy nights on the crush pad to Murder Mystery in the Cave.
$35 for the Signature Tasting in the Cave, five current releases ($45 for groups of 8 or more). $75 for the Reserve Tasting in the Cave, five Reserve wines ($90 for 8 or more). $90 for the Vineyard Tour & Tasting, 90 minutes, seasonal and weather permitting ($100 for 8 or more).
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

About 25 minutes away. Michael and Xochi Birch's family estate pours in a tasting room with a lounge and garden patio on the west side of the Sonoma Plaza. The wines come from an organic vineyard at about 1,200 feet in the Moon Mountain District and are made by Mark Herold, the founder of Merus. The Comparative Experience, an eight-wine overview of the estate for 2 to 6 guests, is $95. Reservations daily, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
About 5 minutes away. Seasonal California cooking from Sonoma County farmers and purveyors on the Sonoma Plaza, served in the courtyard or in the main room by the open kitchen. Lunch is served on weekdays until 3 p.m., and brunch on weekends from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 25 minutes away. John and Nancy Lasseter's organic estate on a Glen Ellen property founded by a French winemaker in 1894; John directed Toy Story. The Estate Vineyard Tour takes you through century-old Heritage Block Zinfandel by club cart, with cheese and charcuterie ($95), and the Patio Tasting of five estate wines looks out over the estate ($60). By reservation only; the entrance is through a school parking lot off Henno Road, and we know the turn.
Back in Kenwood and Glen Ellen by 4:00 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Lasseter is by reservation only, so we confirm its time first and build the day around it.
About $190 to $265 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
