David Coffaro Vineyard & Winery

About the Winery

Dave and Pat Coffaro left city life in 1979 and bought a 20-acre vineyard with a small house in Dry Creek Valley, when the valley was still little known as a grape region. For about 15 years Dave farmed it himself and sold the grapes, first to Ernest and Julio Gallo and later to small Dry Creek wineries, while making a little wine for himself. In 1994 they took out a commercial permit, and the first year's production was 400 cases.

Everything is estate grown on the 20 acres, where more than half the vines were planted in the late 1800s, mostly Zinfandel, Carignan and Petite Sirah, and Dave has added unusual varieties such as Lagrein, Souzão and his favorite, Aglianico, to more than 30 in all. Block 4 is a field blend picked all at once, and the Aca Modot blend is named for a Pomo village that once stood on a knoll in Block 5. Dave still makes the winemaking decisions, working with winemaker Jose Flores since 2018.

The tasting room is among the barrels in the working winery, with Dave's sports and music memorabilia on display; there is nothing fancy about it, and that is the point. The best way to see the place is the vineyard walking tour, hosted by Dave, longtime vineyard manager Catarino Flores or a family member, through century-old vines and almost 30 varieties. Bring comfortable shoes, and a hat in summer.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:35 a.m. from a hotel such as Geyserville Inn or h2hotel in Healdsburg.

10:35 · Pickup at Geyserville Inn or h2hotel

Geyserville Inn, on Geyserville Avenue at the north end of the village, is about 10 minutes from David Coffaro and h2hotel, just off the Healdsburg plaza, about 25, so we time the pickup for the 11 o'clock opening. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · David Coffaro

A tasting of estate wines among the barrels ($10). The vineyard walking tour ($30) adds half an hour; tell us and we adjust the day.

12:10 · Lunch at Diavola

About 10 minutes away. Chef Dino Bugica's restaurant in a historic building on Geyserville Avenue, with Neapolitan-style pizza from a wood-burning oven, handmade pasta and house-cured salumi; the menu changes every day. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:30 · Papapietro Perry

About 15 minutes away. Pinot Noir and Zinfandel from two friends, Ben Papapietro and Bruce Perry, who began making wine in a San Francisco garage in the early 1980s; the winery is still owned by both families. The seated Signature Tasting of five current releases is 75 minutes ($35), and the Reserve Tasting of five reserve wines is $50, Friday to Sunday. Book ahead, with walk-ins taken when space allows; open daily 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for tasters 21 and over.

3:00 · Michel-Schlumberger

About 15 minutes away. A Spanish mission-style estate with a bell tower and a grand courtyard on Wine Creek Road, where Jean-Jacques Michel planted the first vines in 1979; the 100-acre estate grows more than 15 varieties on benchland above Wine Creek. The Estate Tasting is $40, and from March to October the Estate Tour & Tasting, a private tour of the production facility and grounds with panoramic views of the valley, is $75. Reservations required, daily 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; family- and dog-friendly.

4:00 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg or Geyserville by 4:25 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Coffaro opens at 11 and Michel-Schlumberger takes its last reservation at 3, so lunch comes a little early. Coffaro opens Thursday to Monday, and Papapietro Perry pours its Reserve Tasting Friday to Sunday.

About $85 to $135 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
