About the Winery
Copper Six is a first-generation, family-owned wine company in Sonoma County. The family grew up near some of the New World's great vineyards; one of them earned a degree in wine and viticulture at Cal Poly, and the family spent years helping run a multigenerational family business in medical devices and manufacturing before building a family business of their own in wine. The name comes from the way weather changes a copper patina, as each season changes a vintage.
The first vineyard the family bought is the St. Clair Vineyard in Alexander Valley, 19 acres of Sauvignon Blanc running down to the Russian River. In 2023 they pulled out the worn-out vines on their Russian River Valley estate and began replanting it with classic and lesser-known varieties. They also buy from Star Springs Ranch, high in the mountains of Alexander Valley, and the Sangiacomo family's windy Tallgrass Vineyard between Sonoma and Petaluma. The approach is in their own words, "No Fuss, No Drama": limited production, quality first.
For now the family hosts at the Grand Cru winery in Windsor, where Copper Six is made. The Production Tasting is a private tasting with a tour of the cellar and the production floor, a look at how a small winery actually works, and they hope to welcome visitors to the estate once the new vines are bearing.

Gregory Hayes's small winery has made Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and rosé since 2008 with consulting winemaker Kent Humphrey, from small growers such as the Sangiacomo and Windsor Oaks vineyards. Tours and tastings at the winery on Hopper Avenue are by appointment only; we confirm the fee when we book.

About 30 minutes away. Matt and Sara Licklider's winery, conceived in 2005 in the alley behind Spago Beverly Hills, buying from small family vineyards across California. The tasting room on the corner of the Healdsburg plaza feels like a European wine bar, with records spinning on a vintage Marantz turntable. Tastings are $40 to $60; the Elevated Tasting Experience of library and large-format wines in the private lounge is $60, or $75 with bites. Open daily noon to 7 p.m.; reservations strongly encouraged.
