About the Winery

Copain, French for friend or buddy, was founded in 1999 around the idea that wine is best shared with friends and family. Since 2018 its winemaker and general manager has been Ryan Zepaltas, who came to Sonoma to skateboard, found work at La Crema, spent nearly two decades shaping the wines at Siduri, and launched his own acclaimed label, Zepaltas Wines, in 2004.

The winery specializes in vineyard-designate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah from cool-climate vineyards in Mendocino, Monterey and Sonoma counties, with bottlings such as the Taylor Peak, Sealift and DuPratt vineyard wines. The style is inspired by traditional French winemaking: restrained, elegant wines that are made for the table.

The winery sits on a hilltop above the Russian River Valley, and the view is half the visit. Seated tastings start with a welcome pairing; the Vineyard & Winery Promenade takes guests out through the vines and into the winery for a barrel sample before finishing at the table, and the Wine & Food Experience pairs single-vineyard wines with bites from the winery's chef. The tasting room also pours Arrowood's small-production Cabernets for guests who want something bigger.

Tasting Fees

$65 for the Single Vineyard Exploration Flight of five wines. $85 for the Wine & Food Experience. $95 for the Vineyard & Winery Promenade (Thursday to Monday). $25 for the Drink California Flight, and $50 for the Arrowood Wines Experience. All for up to 6 guests.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:45 a.m. from a Russian River Valley hotel such as Farmhouse Inn in Forestville or Vinarosa in Santa Rosa.

9:45 · Pickup at Farmhouse Inn or Vinarosa

Farmhouse Inn, a 25-room inn on River Road in Forestville, is about 15 minutes from Copain, and Vinarosa, set among 92 acres of vineyards in Santa Rosa, about 25. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Copain Wines

The first stop. The Single Vineyard Exploration Flight ($65), or the Vineyard & Winery Promenade ($95) for a walk through the vines first.

11:40 · Bacigalupi Vineyards

About 25 minutes away. A Westside Road family ranch with real history: its Chardonnay went into the 1973 Chateau Montelena that won the 1976 Paris Tasting, and that block still grows here. The Estate Wine Tasting of six estate wines, on the patio or in the oak grove, is $40 and about an hour; the Wine & Cheese Pairing Flight is $60. By reservation, Wednesday to Monday.

12:55 · Lunch at Costeaux French Bakery

About 15 minutes away. There has been a bakery on this stretch of Healdsburg Avenue since 1923, and the Seppi family has run it as Costeaux since 1981. The café serves hearty seasonal dishes indoors or on the patio. Open daily from 7:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:25 · DuMOL

About 20 minutes away. An acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay house, led since 1999 by Scottish-born winegrower Andy Smith and sold mostly to its members. Guests sit at the DuMOL Table inside the working winery, with a cellar tour at some times of year. Focused Here, five current and limited wines, is $90; In Good Time, three current releases beside their library counterparts, is $125. By appointment, 1 to 6 guests.

3:40 · Back to your hotel

Back in Santa Rosa or Forestville by 4:05 p.m.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Bacigalupi is closed on Tuesdays, so this day works Wednesday to Monday. It starts at 9:45 and ends around 4:05; extra time can be added by the hour.

About $195 to $215 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
