Tom and Diane Manning, native New Yorkers, came to California with their young family, and Tom worked in the early days of Trader Joe's, developing its négociant wine brands. In 1981 he opened his own winery in Healdsburg and named it Chateau Diana, "home of Diana," for his wife. In 1984 the family bought the LeBarron Ranch, 60 acres in Dry Creek Valley, and promised to keep all of its original buildings. Their eldest son, Craig, was the founding winemaker until his unexpected death at the turn of the century, and the winery is now owned by his siblings, Dawn and Corey Manning.
The Mannings have always been inventive sellers of wine. The family says it opened the first tasting room on the Healdsburg plaza that was not attached to a winery, in 1985, and Tom was an early maker of wine in a box in 1990. Today the winery makes several brands sold widely in stores and restaurants: Chateau Diana wines at 6% alcohol, Chateau Diana Zero with no alcohol, sparkling wines, the Black Oak value range and the 707 label of small Sonoma County vineyards.
In 2012 the original LeBarron family homestead became the tasting room, and it is the most relaxed stop on Dry Creek Road: wine flights and wines by the glass, wine slushies, a food menu and a shop. Children and dogs are welcome, which is rare in the valley. For couples and small groups, the Picnic & Pour sets a reserved table overlooking the valley with a picnic basket of snacks, and you may well meet one of the Mannings while you are there.
Wine flights, wines by the glass, slushies and food are priced à la carte; a tasting reservation for 1 to 16 guests holds a $10 per person deposit, refunded at checkout. Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. $35 per person for the Picnic & Pour for 1 to 15 guests, plus the purchase of one bottle for every four guests.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, is about 20 minutes from Chateau Diana and Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of town, about 15, so we time the pickup for the 11 o'clock opening. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
