About the Winery

Capo Isetta is the Isetta family's winery, owned by Bill, Marilyn and Dominic Isetta. The family story runs back to Bill's grandfather, Giacomo "Giac" Isetta, a cooper who shaped wine barrels in the 1920s. Bill's father, Andy Isetta, worked at the Christian Brothers Winery and later started a small winery of his own, Old Pioneer Wine Company of San Francisco, and Marilyn's father, Ray Hulmer, was treasurer and controller at Christian Brothers for 35 years. Bill's and Marilyn's families met at the Christian Brothers winery at Mount La Salle. Capo is Italian for "chief."

The wines come from the family's grower friends, many of them old Sonoma names: Sangiacomo for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Cuneo for Cabernet Sauvignon, Mulas for rosé, Petroni for Sangiovese and Kunde for the Wildwood Vineyards fruit. Ryan Kunde makes the wines, aiming for fruit-forward, ready-to-drink bottles. The range runs from Il Vino Frizzante sparkling wine and a sparkling red to Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Carneros Chardonnay, Petaluma Gap Pinot Noir, a Sonoma Valley red blend, Moon Mountain Sangiovese and a Cuneo Cabernet.

The tasting room is on First Street East, right on the plaza, and it has a relaxed, family feel, with sports on the screens and families with little ones made welcome. Behind it is the Barrel Room, a private space among the wine barrels where groups can book a private tasting, a work offsite or a wine-pairing dinner. It is an easy, friendly first stop before we head up the valley.

Tasting Fees

Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. In the private Barrel Room, a tasting is $50 per person for wine only or $75 with charcuterie, and a private dinner and wine pairing is $200 per person. The room itself rents for $350 Monday to Thursday and $500 Friday to Sunday, plus the cost of wine.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:50 a.m. from a Sonoma hotel such as Ledson Hotel or MacArthur Place.

10:50 · Pickup at Ledson Hotel or MacArthur Place

Ledson Hotel, on the east side of the Sonoma Plaza, and MacArthur Place, a few blocks south of the plaza, are each about 5 minutes from Capo Isetta. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Capo Isetta

A tasting in the plaza tasting room, about an hour, or a private Barrel Room tasting ($50, or $75 with charcuterie).

12:30 · Lunch at Salt+Stone

About 30 minutes away. A steakhouse, seafood grill and oyster bar among the vineyards on the Sonoma Highway in Kenwood, with craft cocktails and tables overlooking a koi pond. Lunch is served Thursday to Tuesday from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:50 · Hamilton Family Wines

About 5 minutes away. Greg and Lindsay Hamilton's family winery in Kenwood, built around Grenache and the other Rhône grapes, with tastings in an olive grove, in cabanas or in the tasting room. The Rhône Table pours their tiny-lot Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah side by side, then the blend, with a cheese and charcuterie board, about 75 minutes ($75). Book 48 hours ahead; open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., final hosted tasting at 4.

3:15 · Wellington Cellars

About 10 minutes away. The Belmonte family's estate on Dunbar Road in Glen Ellen, with old-vine Zinfandel dating to 1882 and an olive grove beside the vines. The seated Olive Grove Tasting of six wines is $40, and the Owners Tasting, hosted by Vittorio and Henry Belmonte themselves, $130. Reservations for seated tastings; open daily from 10 a.m.

4:15 · Back to your hotel

Back in Sonoma by 4:40 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a relaxed day. Salt+Stone serves lunch every day but Wednesday, and Hamilton's Rhône Table needs 48 hours' notice, so we book it with the rest of the day.

About $115 per person in tasting fees for Hamilton and Wellington, paid directly to each winery. Capo Isetta's tasting-room fee is to be verified upon reservation; its private Barrel Room tasting is $50 to $75.
