About the Winery

Fred Furth founded Chalk Hill in 1972 after spotting the land from his plane while flying over the Russian River: a natural amphitheater in the hills of eastern Sonoma County. His first planting was 11 acres of Chardonnay, still called the Founder's Block. The Chalk Hill appellation followed in 1983, and Foley Family Wines bought the estate in 2010.

The estate covers 1,300 acres, and more than two-thirds of it is left wild, with the vines contoured through the native oaks and grasses. It sits between the cooler Russian River Valley and the warmer Alexander Valley, on chalk-colored volcanic ash that gave the area its name. Chardonnay is the flagship: a clonal trial with UC Davis that began in 1996 led to a replanting, and 23 Chardonnay clones now grow here, while Bordeaux varieties ripen on the warmer slopes.

Tastings are served from an elevated tasting room and patio looking over the vineyards. The Vineyard Overlook Tasting pours small-lot Chardonnays and Bordeaux-style reds, and the Estate & Garden Hummer Tour explores the vineyards and gardens of the estate.

Tasting Fees

$50 for the Vineyard Overlook Tasting of four small-lot wines, about 90 minutes. $75 for the Taste of Estate Flight of four reserve wines, about 90 minutes. $150 for the two-hour Estate & Garden Hummer Tour & Tasting, Wednesday to Sunday for up to 7 guests. A cheese and garden pairing can be added for $40.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
