Acaibo, Gonzague & Claire Lurton Vineyards

About the Winery

Claire and Gonzague Lurton, whose family estates in Bordeaux include the Margaux classified growths Château Durfort-Vivens and Château Ferrière, began Acaibo in 2012, moving to California with their children for three years. They chose a 10-hectare vineyard in Chalk Hill, where the Russian River Valley, Knights Valley and Alexander Valley meet, and had to build everything: there was no winery, and part of the vineyard had to be replanted. Technical director Nicolas Vonderheyden, raised in a winegrowing family in Margaux, has run the estate since 2017.

The vineyard sits at about 250 meters on volcanic, clay soils, and the Lurtons farm it organically, with cover crops that hold the morning dew and only one or two waterings a year from ponds on the property. Acaibo is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, made to balance freshness and structure; Decanter's Georgina Hindle gave the 2017 95 points. The name joins a Native American word for fish and water with "ibo," three, for the Lurtons' three children, their three Bordeaux grapes and their Bordeaux roots.

The estate visit is a two-hour private tour: a walk through the vineyard to talk about farming, a barrel tasting in the winery, then a seated tasting in the old barn of Acaibo beside the family's Bordeaux wines, with cheese, charcuterie and home-baked baguette. In downtown Healdsburg, across from Costeaux Bakery, the tasting room pours Acaibo's Sonoma wines and a flight of the Lurtons' Médoc châteaux.

Tasting Fees

The 2-hour private vineyard tour does not have a published fee; tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. In the Healdsburg tasting room, $35 for Journey to Sonoma, a welcome glass of Sauvignon Blanc and four Acaibo wines, and $45 for Journey to Bordeaux, a flight of the family's Médoc wines.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

The private vineyard tour, barrel tasting and seated tasting of Sonoma and Bordeaux wines in the old barn, about 2 hours (fee confirmed when we book).

12:25 · Lunch at Costeaux French Bakery

About 25 minutes away. There has been a bakery on this stretch of Healdsburg Avenue since 1923, and the Seppi family has run it as Costeaux since 1981. The café serves hearty seasonal dishes indoors or on the patio. Open daily from 7:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:45 · Viszlay Vineyards

About 10 minutes away. A family-owned boutique winery atop a vineyard-covered hill on Limerick Lane, pouring small-lot wines from its 10-acre estate that are sold only at the winery and through its club. 2:55 · LIOCO Wine Co.

About 10 minutes away. Matt and Sara Licklider's winery, conceived in 2005 in the alley behind Spago Beverly Hills, buying from small family vineyards across California. The tasting room on the corner of the Healdsburg plaza feels like a European wine bar, with records spinning on a vintage Marantz turntable. Tastings are $40 to $60; the Elevated Tasting Experience of library and large-format wines in the private lounge is $60, or $75 with bites. Open daily noon to 7 p.m.; reservations strongly encouraged.

3:55 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 4:00 p.m., under six and a half hours after pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The Acaibo tour is by appointment, and we confirm it first; if the estate is not available, we book the Healdsburg tasting room, open Thursday to Monday from noon, and shape the day around it.

About $60 to $100 per person in tasting fees for Viszlay and LIOCO, paid directly to each winery; the Acaibo vineyard tour fee is to be verified upon reservation.
