Boars' View began in 2007, when founder Fred Schrader and his friends David and Judy Steiner, now the proprietors, bought a wild hilltop two ridgelines in from the Sonoma coastline, in the Fort Ross-Seaview appellation. There were no roads; the late Ulises Valdez Sr., one of the best-known Sonoma Coast vineyard managers, developed the land and planted the vines in 2008. Thomas Rivers Brown, who began his career with Carol and Fred Schrader in 2000 and makes the Rivers-Marie wines, has been winemaker from the start.
The vineyard sits at about 1,000 feet, about 45 minutes northwest of Cazadero. Most of it is Pinot Noir on Goldridge loam, with a small block of Chardonnay, about an acre of the Wente clone, on coastal clay. There are three wines: the BDR Pinot Noir, named for Bohan Dillon Road; the estate Pinot Noir, called The Coast; and the estate Chardonnay. Jeb Dunnuck's site rated the 2024 releases 94+, 96 and 95 points.
The wines are sold through the Purchase page of the website, and the company lists a post office box in Calistoga. There is no tasting room, and the vineyard is remote, so Boars' View does not receive visitors. The day below is based in Healdsburg and includes two producers that pour wines from the same Fort Ross-Seaview ridges.
Boars' View does not offer tastings. The three wineries on the day below run about $175 per person: $45 at Hirsch, $75 at Flowers and $55 at Gary Farrell.
Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Boars' View does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Its vineyard is a long drive out on the coast, so the day starts in Healdsburg, where two Fort Ross-Seaview producers pour. Both hotels are a few minutes from the first stop. The day runs about five and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 5 minutes away. A Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay estate founded in 1978 in Fort Ross-Seaview, the same appellation as Boars' View, poured by appointment in Healdsburg. Discover Hirsch is $45, a communal tasting of four wines, 45 minutes. Open daily by appointment.
About 10 minutes away. Extreme Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Camp Meeting Ridge and Sea View Ridge, poured at House of Flowers on Westside Road. The Sonoma Coast Journey is $75, three wines with a snack board, 60 minutes. Open Thursday to Monday, by reservation.
About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Valette, a Sonoma County restaurant just off the Healdsburg plaza; we confirm hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. Single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from a hilltop winery on Westside Road. The Discovery Tasting is $55, about 90 minutes, outdoors. Open daily 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Back by about 3:40 p.m., about five and three-quarter hours after pickup.
Flowers is open Thursday to Monday, so plan this day for those days. For a day on the coast itself, Fort Ross Vineyard & Winery near Jenner, the only tasting room in Fort Ross-Seaview, hosts tastings Friday to Tuesday.
About $175 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
