Alexander Valley · Sonoma County
A restored 1880 hillside estate with a stone winery house, century-old olive trees and private tastings of estate Cabernet, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Blue Rock's 100 acres in the hills at the north end of Alexander Valley were settled by Italian immigrants in 1880, and the original stone house on the property was the Villa Maria winery until Prohibition closed it. Kenny and Cheryl Kahn bought the estate in 1987 and restored it, keeping its old-world character and its olive trees, some more than 140 years old.
Forty-six acres of hillside are planted to the Bordeaux varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec, with three more acres of Syrah added in 1993. Kenny Kahn works as the vigneron, overseeing the land and the wines, with three winemakers on staff, and the wines are made from the estate's own vineyards.
Visits here are private and unhurried. The tasting runs about 90 minutes, and the estate suggests planning two hours, which gives time to take in the old stone house and the olive trees. For a longer day, the Vintner Table lunch pairs the wines with three courses over two and a half to three hours, and the estate's Vintner Cottage can be booked for stays of two nights or more.
$65 per person for the 90-minute Private Visit & Tasting for 1 to 8 guests ($85 per person for 9 to 16), plus tax. $130 per person for the Vintner Table three-course lunch for 2 to 8 guests, about 2½ to 3 hours.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

The first stop. The 90-minute Private Visit & Tasting ($65), with time to walk out among the old olive trees.
About 35 minutes away. The Martorana family bought its land on West Dry Creek Road in 1983, and today certified organic vineyards and olive trees surround a small winery where tastings can be poured in the wine cave; Gio Martorana makes Olio di Gio olive oil on a traditional press from Italy. Tasting fees are confirmed when we book. Open Friday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations recommended.
About 15 minutes away. A country store since 1881 at the crossroads of Dry Creek Valley, with a deli for sandwiches, soups and salads, a front porch over the valley and a garden out back. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 5 minutes away. Jason Passalacqua, a fourth-generation Dry Creek Valley vintner, opened his winery in 2004, and its seated appointments take place on a deck under the redwood trees. The Single Block Cabernet tasting compares five Cabernets from his parents' vineyard, all from the same vintage and clone, for $75. Appointments at 10:45 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; no children or pets.
Back in Healdsburg by 4:10 p.m.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Martorana opens Friday to Monday, so this day works on those days; Passalacqua seats at 3 p.m., so lunch is unhurried, and the day ends around 4:10.
About $140 per person in tasting fees for Blue Rock and Passalacqua; Martorana's fee is to be verified upon reservation. Each is paid directly to the winery.
