Martorana Family Winery

About the Winery

The family's wine roots go back to the Accornero family of Santo Stefano, in northwestern Italy. Clara Accornero came to San Francisco in 1939 and married Anthony Martorana, from Palermo, in 1940, and after years of picnics in the area their son Tony and his wife, Diane, bought land in Dry Creek in 1983. Tony and his cousin Johnny Guisso made the family's first wine under the Due Sorelle label, and today Tony and his sons, Tony Jr. and Gio, run the winery.

Gio began making olive oil in 1996, after his parents brought a traditional press home from Italy, blending Arbequina, Coratina, Frantoio, Leccino and other varieties into Olio di Gio, hand-bottled, corked and waxed at the winery. In 2005 the family added small lots of wine from its certified organic vineyards: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, rosé, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Mozzafiato, the signature red blend.

The 30-acre estate on West Dry Creek Road has rolling hills and cool creeks, and the winery makes the most of the setting: a curated tasting in the small wine cave, lunch and wine on the vineyard patio, or a creekside picnic with a blanket and a bottle. It is a relaxed, family-run stop, and the winery invites cyclists exploring West Dry Creek Road to make it their first.

10:35 · Pickup at Two Thirty-Five or Hotel Trio

Two Thirty-Five, a small suite hotel on Healdsburg Avenue, is about 25 minutes from Martorana and Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of town, about 20, so we time the pickup for the 11 o'clock opening. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Martorana

A tasting of organic estate wines, in the wine cave or on the vineyard patio; we book ahead.

12:30 · Lunch at Dry Creek General Store

About 15 minutes away. A country store since 1881 at the crossroads of Dry Creek Valley, with a deli for sandwiches, soups and salads, a front porch over the valley and a garden out back. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:40 · Aesthete

About 10 minutes away. The new Dry Creek home of aesthete wines, on the former Truett Hurst property, where guests sit in red Adirondack chairs on private patios along the bank of Dry Creek, beside an organic farm and a herd of rescued goats; the wines are made by Jesse Katz, the first winemaker named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Tasting fees are confirmed when we book. Open Thursday to Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; leashed dogs welcome.

3:00 · Preston Farm & Winery

About 20 minutes away. Lou and Susan Preston's organic farm and winery at the top of Dry Creek Valley, with estate olive oil, bread and produce in its farm store. The tasting of 5 to 6 estate wines is $35 and takes 60 to 75 minutes, for parties of up to 6. Appointments required; open daily.

4:00 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 4:35 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Martorana opens Friday to Monday at 11, so this day starts with a 10:35 pickup and works on those days. Preston's tasting can run to 75 minutes, so the day may end closer to 5.

About $35 per person at Preston, paid directly to the winery; tasting fees at Martorana and Aesthete are to be verified upon reservation.
