About the Winery
Matt and Dom Michael started Baldassari Wines in 2003 with 92 cases of Bennett Valley Syrah. Dom was leaving a long career in the mail industry, and Matt, a UC Davis graduate in fermentation science, was assistant winemaker at Quivira. Twenty years on, Matt is winemaker at Robert Young Estate Winery, and Dom greets guests at the family's wine lounge in downtown Windsor.
Baldassari showcases small Sonoma County vineyards farmed by independent growers: Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and rosé, Chardonnay from the Kiser Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast, Syrah from the Nolan Vineyard in Bennett Valley, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon from Asti Ranch in Alexander Valley and a Knights Valley Sauvignon Blanc. Baldassari was runner-up at Charlie Palmer's Pig and Pinot in 2023, among 60 of Sonoma County's best Pinot Noir producers.
The lounge on Windsor Road opens in the afternoon, so it suits the second half of the day: flights of five house wines or four whites or reds, with boards made to go with them. Every Friday evening there is live music from 6 to 8, and the lounge can be booked for private parties.

Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, and h2hotel, a green-roofed hotel just off the Healdsburg plaza, are each about 20 minutes from Harper's Rest, the first stop. Baldassari opens in the afternoon, so the day begins on Westside Road. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 20 minutes away. The former Arista estate on Westside Road, bought in 2025 by Chris and Piper Underwood, where a 19th-century hops farmer rests among the vines under an old California bay laurel. The Estate Expressions Tasting of four estate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from several vintages, with views to Mount St. Helena, is a $30 deposit and runs 60 to 90 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in summer, Wednesday to Sunday from November to April; reservations encouraged, leashed dogs welcome.

About 20 minutes away. There has been a bakery on this stretch of Healdsburg Avenue since 1923, and the Seppi family has run it as Costeaux since 1981. The café serves hearty seasonal dishes indoors or on the patio. Open daily from 7:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? Justin Harmon, a Chicago software engineer turned winemaker, made his first wine in 2007 and now runs Argot with his wife, Beth: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah from Bennett Valley and Sonoma Mountain, and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, many in lots of 100 to 170 cases. Private, seated tastings in its north Santa Rosa tasting room, by appointment only; we confirm the fee when we book.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Baldassari opens at 1 p.m. (noon on Sunday, 2 p.m. on Friday), so this day starts at 10:30, puts Baldassari after lunch and ends around 4:30; it works any day but Friday. From November to April Harper's Rest hosts Wednesday to Sunday.
