About the Winery

Justin Harmon grew up in Chicago in a family with no ties to wine, studied in Philadelphia, worked briefly as a chemical engineer and then as a software engineer, and filled his apartment closets with wine. He came to Sonoma County for his first harvest in 2005, worked harvest internships in 2006 and 2007, and that year fermented his first grapes in a professional winery: the 2007 Preamble Syrah, Argot's first bottling. In 2011 an intern named Beth Thompson joined the sorting table at his harvest; they married in 2015, and today they run every part of Argot together as a first-generation winery.

Argot works in tiers. The Association cuvées, released twice a year only to members, are Bennett Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, Sonoma Mountain Pinot Noir and Syrah, and a Napa Valley Cabernet. The Select Cuvées are barrel selections such as the Bastard Tongue Pinot Noir, made since 2011, and Indigo Syrah. Vineyard designates include Simpatico Ranch Chardonnay from 50-year-old vines in Bennett Valley, Kanzler Vineyard Pinot Noir from the Sebastopol Hills and Steiner Vineyard Syrah from 1,100 feet on Sonoma Mountain, plus Napa Cabernets from Bonny's Vineyard in Oakville, Sage Ridge above Lake Hennessey and the Rutherford Bench. Many are made in lots of 100 to 170 cases.

The name is a word for the private language a close group shares, and the visit fits it: a private, seated tasting of the wines at Argot's tasting room in north Santa Rosa, by appointment only. It is an easy first stop from a Santa Rosa hotel, and a chance to taste wines that mostly go to the mailing list.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Santa Rosa hotel such as Vinarosa or Hotel E.

10:00 · Pickup at Vinarosa or Hotel E

Vinarosa, set among 92 acres of vineyards in Santa Rosa, and Hotel E, a restored 1906 Beaux-Arts landmark on the square in downtown Santa Rosa, are each about 10 minutes from Argot Wines. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Argot Wines

A private, seated tasting by appointment, about an hour; the fee is confirmed when we book.

11:35 · Bruliam Wines

About 20 minutes away. Kerith Overstreet left a career in medicine for UC Davis and her first harvest in 2008, and now makes about 1,000 cases a year, mostly single-vineyard Pinot Noir, some from her own Torrey Hill vineyard in the Russian River Valley. She hosts the five-wine Winemaker Tasting with local cheese herself ($85); the 60-minute Signature Tasting of three wines is $50. By reservation at the Grand Cru winery in Windsor, 2-guest minimum.

12:55 · Lunch at Costeaux French Bakery

About 20 minutes away. There has been a bakery on this stretch of Healdsburg Avenue since 1923, and the Seppi family has run it as Costeaux since 1981. The café serves hearty seasonal dishes indoors or on the patio. Open daily from 7:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:10 · Idlewild Wines

About 5 minutes away. Sam Bilbro's wines from Piedmont's grapes, Arneis, Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo, grown in the high hills of Mendocino and Sonoma, poured with prosciutto, salumi and Italian cheeses a stone's throw from the Healdsburg plaza. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations recommended. We confirm the fee when we book.

3:10 · Back to your hotel

Back in Santa Rosa by 3:45 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Idlewild hosts Wednesday to Sunday, so this day works Wednesday to Sunday; Argot sets its appointment times, which we confirm when we book.

About $50 to $85 per person at Bruliam, paid directly to the winery; tasting fees at Argot and Idlewild are to be verified upon reservation.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
