Sonoma Valley · Sonoma County
A family-owned 33-acre estate first established as a winery in 1880, with private tastings among its historic ruins and vineyards, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

German immigrants Henry and Anna Bolle bought this land and first established it as a winery in 1880. By the late 1880s the property, then 545 acres, was producing nearly 50,000 gallons of wine a year from just over 90 acres of vines. Since then it has changed hands several times, been divided into smaller parcels, survived Prohibition and even spent time as a turkey farm. Katie Honey and Dan Whalen, trained sommeliers who had visited the area for years and married here, arrived before the 2020 harvest and run it today as a family-owned winery, event venue, cut-flower farm and their home.
The estate grows Pinot Noir and the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Winemaker Drew Damskey, whose family has grown grapes and made wine in Napa and Sonoma for generations and who also makes his own Palmeri wines, was named a Winemaker to Watch by the San Francisco Chronicle in 2017. The 2019 estate Merlot was named to The Press Democrat's top 100 wines of California and won Best of Class at the 2023 East Meets West competition.
Visits here are private by design. Each tasting is for one party of up to six and lasts about 75 minutes, with time to explore the estate, its historic ruins and the vineyard views while you sip. The estate is also a commercial flower farm that supplies florists across Sonoma County, and the owners' Goldendoodles, Bubs and Magnum, are the official welcoming committee. It sits at the north end of Sonoma Valley on the edge of Santa Rosa, which makes it an easy pairing with Kenwood.
$75 for the private Annadel Estate Winery tasting, about 75 minutes, for up to six guests.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Good to Know
Each party is limited to six guests, and the estate hosts only a small number of guests each week, so book early. The estate also hosts weddings and events, and a one-bedroom cottage on the property can be rented.
Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Santa Rosa hotel such as Flamingo Resort or Hotel La Rose.
Flamingo Resort, a resort with a pool and spa on Santa Rosa's east side, is about 15 minutes from Annadel Estate Winery, and Hotel La Rose, a 1907 hotel in Santa Rosa's historic Railroad Square, about 20. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
The private estate tasting, with time to explore the grounds ($75). About 75 minutes.
About 10 minutes away. A small Syrah specialist that Wine & Spirits named a Winery to Watch, pouring in a cottage on Adobe Canyon Road where Scottish-born winemaker Steve Law hosts the tasting himself. His flight of limited-production, cool-climate Syrah, Pinot Noir, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc is the Signature Tasting Experience ($50); a seat across from the winemaker is what makes it special. By appointment only, requested through the winery's form.
About 25 minutes away. Chef Mark Stark's modern tavern in an old house on Fourth Street in Santa Rosa, with plates to share from a wood-fired grill and two patios. Open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 20 minutes away. The Ledson family's highest vineyard, at up to 2,000 feet on Cavedale Road in the Moon Mountain District, is private, so its Cabernet Sauvignon is poured inside the Ledson Castle, the French Normandy-style landmark on the Sonoma Highway. The private, seated Mountain Terraces tasting of five estate wines with a cheese board is $125 plus tax, about 2 hours. By reservation, Thursday to Saturday; a hospitality coordinator confirms each booking, and cancellations need 72 hours' notice.
Back in Santa Rosa by 5:05 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Mountain Terraces pours Thursday to Saturday and MacLaren is by appointment, so this day works Thursday to Saturday once MacLaren confirms. The Mountain Terraces tasting runs about two hours, so the day ends around 5.
About $250 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
