Napa · Napa Valley
An 1870 estate below the Stags Leap range, revived by the Vandendriessche family, with a cave they bored into the hillside and private tastings under a 100-year-old oak, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

White Rock was one of Napa Valley's early vineyards: Dr. Pettingill planted the rocky hillside in 1870 and built a winery from stone he quarried on the land. A century later, in 1977, Henri and Claire Vandendriessche bought the 64-acre estate, moved their young family into the old stone winery and replanted. Their sons now run it, with Christopher as winemaker since 1999 and Michael as winegrower.
The vineyard sits in a small natural bowl about 300 feet above the valley floor, on soils of compressed white volcanic ash. In 1987 Henri bored a 6,000-square-foot cave into the hillside with an old coal mining machine, working with engineer Alf Burtleson. Red wines rest in niches in that cave for two to three years after bottling, so White Rock releases its Cabernet and Chardonnay later than most.
Visits are private and arranged with the family. Depending on the day, that can mean a stroll through the historic vineyard, a tour of the caves, or a tasting under the 100-year-old oak tree. It is quiet up here, just a few minutes from the Silverado Trail, and guests who like old estates and family stories tend to love it.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. White Rock does not publish a fee for its private visits.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
