About the Winery

Vine Cliff was born in 1870 and 1871, when George Burrage and Thomas Tucker bought 500 acres from George Yount's estate. It became one of Napa's largest early wineries, and in the 1890s, under John Fry, it had an 18-room mansion. After Fry died in 1901 the buildings vanished, leaving the stone foundation and the 1871 caves, and Prohibition made it a ghost winery.

The Sweeney family began restoring the estate in 1985, kept the old caves and reopened in 1995. In 2023 Stephany Maillery and Stephan Crétier took over, and the name became Vine Cliff 1871. Today the 100-acre Oakville estate grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc, with Mayaan Koschitzky leading the winemaking.

The draw here is history you can walk through: original terraced vineyard blocks climbing the hillside off the Silverado Trail, and caves dug in 1871 where wine still ages. The top wine, Accolā, is a Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend from the upper benchlands, under 100 cases a vintage. Tastings and vineyard tours are by inquiry; we arrange it on your behalf.
