Heidi Peterson Barrett started La Sirena in 1994, when a client's custom crush Sangiovese fell through and she bottled it herself, 200 cases under a new mermaid label. The name comes from a card in the Mexican game Loteria. The flagship Cabernet Sauvignon followed with the 1996 vintage, and she still owns and makes the wine today.
Barrett has made wine in Napa Valley since the 1980s, for names such as Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Grace Family and Paradigm. Her wines earned five perfect 100-point scores in a few years, and a 6-liter bottle of 1992 Screaming Eagle sold for $500,000 at the Napa Valley Wine Auction in 2000. La Sirena makes about 3,000 cases a year of eight to ten wines.
After more than 50 years in wine, she opened her own tasting room in Calistoga in spring 2026. It is also a gallery for her paintings, ceramics and jewelry, with a patio looking across the vineyards. Alongside La Sirena, the room pours Barrett & Barrett, the label she makes with her husband Bo Barrett of Chateau Montelena, in the Connoisseur Tasting.
$50 for the Signature Tasting of four La Sirena wines, about 75 minutes. $75 for the Artisan Tasting, about 90 minutes. $100 for the Connoisseur Tasting of La Sirena, Barrett & Barrett and Aviatrix Cabernet Sauvignon, about 2 hours.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
