About the Winery

The 50 by 50 is the wine label of Gerald V. Casale, co-founder of the band Devo. He writes that California's new wave of chefs and winemakers changed how he ate and drank after Devo moved west in 1978, and that a 1989 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir made him a lifelong Pinot Noir devotee. Wine Spectator reported in 2014 that Casale has a 23-acre estate in Napa's Wooden Valley and that the first release, the 2012 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, was made by winemaker Kenn Vigoda.

The brand launched with a Pinot Noir and a rosé of Pinot Noir. Casale's site says the fruit came from Rodgers Creek in the Sonoma Coast AVA, from vines on Kidd stony loam at about 675 feet. The current wines are a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir at $32 a bottle and a Carneros Rosé of Pinot Noir at $23.

There is no tasting room or published visiting program. The wines are sold online, with a club and a newsletter, and ship to most states. The day below heads to Carneros, the cool, windy district where Napa and Sonoma meet, for three wineries known for Pinot Noir and sparkling wine.

Tasting Fees

The 50 by 50 does not offer tastings.

On the day below, Saintsbury's Garden Tasting is $65, Etude's Terroir tasting is $55, and Domaine Carneros's daily tasting starts at $45.

Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
