Crystal Springs of Napa Valley
A family winery in an 1891 stone cellar on the slopes of Howell Mountain, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

John Bremer and his wife spent about five years studying fruit, terroir and properties before buying a winery, and the search kept leading them to Howell Mountain. In 2002 they bought the old Deer Park Winery on Deer Park Road, then kept the gates closed for the first year while they installed new winemaking equipment.
The stone winery was built in 1891 by John and Jacob Sutter as the original Sutter Home Winery and Distillery. It is built into the mountainside, which keeps the cellar naturally cool, and caves dug for barrel storage hold their temperature and humidity without mechanical cooling. The estate has grown from 47 acres to 110, and winemaker Bob Bolan has made the wines since 2003.
Bremer's motto is patience without compromise. Reds spend almost three years in barrel and up to three more in bottle before release. Tastings are relaxed and personal: five current releases for $45, poured on the property with its 1922 farmhouse, now the offices, and wrap-around porch. Guests can ask for a cave tour at no extra charge, and kids and leashed dogs are welcome.
$45 for a tasting of five current-release wines, waived with the purchase of two bottles per person. A cave tour can be added at no extra charge.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
